WHAT WE DO:

ESLC envisions a community where all children read with pride and joy to become life-long learners. The mission, unlocking each child’s potential through the foundation of reading, empowers children to succeed in school, graduate, and become contributing members of our community. Each child reads at grade level by third grade.
2. Each child’s social-emotional skills make it possible t

o choose their own future.
3. Caregivers are empowered to be their child’s first and foremost teacher. VOLUNTEER LITERACY MENTORS NEEDED! East Side Learning Center and AARP Foundation Experience Corps are seeking volunteer Literacy Mentors to support students and teachers by providing one-to-one tutoring sessions. Volunteer as a Literacy Mentor to Kindergarten - 3rd grade students in St. A caring relationship and one-on-one tutoring will help a student grow their literacy skills and achieve grade level reading! Virtual and in-person tutoring opportunities. Volunteers will be provided with everything they need to tutor: training, technology, materials and staff support.

2 day/week commitment for the school year. Volunteers are eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Living Allowance ($220/month) and Education Award ($1,342), which can be used by the recipient or transferred to a child or grandchild for college courses. $33.31 provides one hour of tutoring for a child

$133.23 supports a child’s reading growth for a week

$279.68 provides two weeks of tutoring and two books for a child

$1,395.11 ensures one child receives eight free books and tutoring for a school year

Our Story

HOW CAN YOU HELP? It takes just one tutor, one book, and one hour a week to change a child’s future. Work with a child in need, using easy-to-implement lesson plans and story books designed for that child’s personal ability and interests, to help her or him gain the skills and confidence to be reading at grade level by 3rd grade. If you enjoy working with young children, please consider volunteering. Help us unlock each child’s potential through the foundation of reading. Tutoring times are available Monday – Thursday from 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM during the school year and during the mornings Monday – Friday throughout the summer.
