We are excited to share that the Minnesota Center for Diversity in Economics (MCDE) has compiled a new resource sheet featuring diverse and inclusive Open Educational Resources (OER) for high school economics classrooms. This resource sheet is now available on the MCDE website for anyone to use.
Our goal is simple: help educators find high-quality economics materials that reflect a wider range of experiences, perspectives, and people.
Previous literature has documented that economics materials rarely are diverse or inclusive. Examples of women comprise only 24% of K-12 online economic lessons, while Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) representation only occurs in 16% of materials. This lack of representation may be a reason female and BIPOC students report lower levels of relevance and belonging in economics compared to their white male counterparts.
Our new open access resource sheet connects each lesson plan, video or article to national and state-specific economics standards. We also piloted the preliminary resource sheet with teachers this summer and teachers were enthusiastic – calling it “a hell of a resource!”
