“The good doesn’t leave good people.”
I heard someone say that today, and I instantly thought of our unhoused community.
I think most people who have never stepped foot in an encampment would be blown away by the kindness, compassion, and big beautiful hearts that exist there.
As volunteers, we’ve witnessed some incredible moments.
We’ve seen a grown man get emotional over a clean, dry pair of socks.
We’ve seen people grow gardens, not just for themselves, but so they could share fresh vegetables with their neighbors.
We’ve seen someone offered the last available tent, only to step aside because they felt the person behind them needed it more.
We’ve seen people carry heavy bags and supplies for others simply because they could.
Those moments are humbling.
I won’t pretend everything at an encampment is beautiful. It isn’t. There is hardship, trauma, addiction, mental illness, violence, and heartbreak. There are people who make poor choices and people who cause problems.
But there is also humanity.
There is generosity.
There is compassion.
There is community.
And sometimes, we see more of those things in the people society has written off than we do in people living comfortably behind closed doors.
“The good doesn’t leave good people”.
Sometimes it just survives in places most of us never think to look.
Have a beautiful evening good humans, from all of us here at Walking With A Purpose-Minnesota.
