Today, as the Franciscan Brothers of Peace, we celebrate the feast of St. Padre Pio.

St. Padre Pio reminds us that holiness is found in a life centered on Jesus Christ.

What many people do not know is the sacrifice that surrounded his vocation. Padre Pio’s father, Grazio, traveled to the United States to find work, including working as a laborer on a farm in Pennsylvania. He sent money back home so that his son could continue his studies and pursue his Franciscan vocation. Behind Padre Pio’s vocation was the quiet sacrifice of his family.

Today is also a special day for our community because our own Brother Pio is named after this great Franciscan saint.

St. Padre Pio, pray for Brother Pio and for all of us!

Today is the feast day of St. Joseph of Cupertino, a Franciscan friar known especially for his simplicity, humility, deep prayer, and extraordinary experiences of levitation—earning him the nickname “the Flying Friar.”

St. Joseph of Cupertino also has a special connection to our community because he is the saint from whom our Brother Joseph received his religious name.

The story of how Brother Joseph received his name is an interesting one. Brother Paul, who was the superior of our community at the time, was visiting Assisi, Italy, and staying with the Conventual Franciscan Friars. During his stay, he had the privilege of staying in the room associated with St. Joseph of Cupertino.

While there, Brother Paul made a decision. In our community, it has been a tradition for the superior to choose the religious name of the next brother. Brother Paul decided that whoever the next brother to enter the community would be, he would receive the name Joseph, after St. Joseph of Cupertino.

That next brother was our Brother Joseph.

And so today, as we celebrate the feast of St. Joseph of Cupertino, we also remember the beautiful story behind Brother Joseph’s name and pray in a special way for him.

St. Joseph of Cupertino, pray for us
