Minnesota Indian Women's Sexual Assault Coalition Creating Safety and Justice Through the Teachings of Our Grandmothers

The Minnesota Indian Women’s Sexual Assault Coalition (MIWSAC) is a statewide tribal coalition with individual and program membership from across the state. The membership is comprised of American Indian and Alaska Native women and allies who bring with them extensive cultural knowledge and long histories of working in sexual assault and/or domestic violence programs. It is their effort and dedica

tion that propel us forward as we work to end sexual violence in our communities. MIWSAC strives to reclaim the traditional values that honor the sovereignty of our women, children, and Two Spirit relatives by incorporating culture and spirituality into every aspect of program operations. MIWSAC also provides national technical assistance and training to tribes and organizations across the country. If you are interested in being involved with the coalition or if you want more information on training we can provide, please visit our website at miwsac.org or give us a call!

In many Native communities, alcohol and substance use disorders (AUD/SUD) are intertwined with the impacts of Westernization, Eurocentrism, forced displacement, boarding schools, and systemic violence. These harms were not accidental, they were deliberate strategies aimed at eroding cultural identities and destabilizing communities.

The Incorporating Victim-Centered Practices into Tribal Law Enforcement Sexual Assault Protocols: A Companion Guide to Tribal Law Enforcement Protocol Resource: Sexual Assault (2008) (Companion Guide) expands on a host of TLPI resources on addressing sexual assault in Indian country and on Tribal lands. With this Companion Guide, TLPI hopes that all those looking to draft, enhance, or amend Tribal law enforcement protocols for responding to sexual assault have a useable resource to enable them to incorporate victim-centered approaches.

The "Tribal Legal Code Resource: Sexual Assault Considerations for Tribal Sexual Assault Code Development" is a product of the Tribal Law and Policy Institute, a project partner on the NTCSA. With this resource, TLPI hopes that Tribal victim advocates will have access to information to assist them in drafting Tribal codes that address sexual assault in their communities or galvanizing an effort to create/amend/expand Tribal codes in this area. The resource centers around adult sexual assault victims/perpetrators rather than child victims/perpetrators. The resource focuses on information that is accessible, ready-to-use/reference, and educational. Recent TLPI work with this focus includes Pocket Guide: Tribal Victim Advocacy in Criminal Cases (2022).

Photos from our TSASP Site Visits this past week 🩡🌻

Our team had the opportunity to visit with the Otoe-Missouria Tribe TSASP Ugisa Chi Program, the Ponca Victim Services Program, and the Osage Nation Family Violence Prevention Program. These site visits provided opportunities for support around grant management, TSASP purpose areas and scope, support group facilitation, client intake processes, and policy review.

We appreciated the opportunity to learn more about their program, discuss challenges and successes, and explore ways to strengthen services for survivors. We are grateful to all the TSASP programs for all that they do for victim/survivors, their families, and their communities.

Miigwech/Pidamaya ye to all who came, and to Senator Amy Klobuchar for your continued advocacy for victim/survivors!
