Donors want to understand the opportunities and challenges facing their communities and to learn more about the organizations making a difference in their neighborhoods.

They also want a trusted partner who can help connect their values with meaningful community impact — that’s where the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation comes in.

In our latest blog post, our Director of Philanthropic Advising Aurea Gerard shares how a simple transfer from a national donor advised fund (DAF) provider to a community foundation can grow your giving in meaningful ways.

For Janice LaFloe, executive director of Montessori American Indian Childcare Center, the work they do is more than early childhood education — it is healing work, ensuring Ojibwe and Dakota language and stories are passed from one generation to the next.

"When you wrap them in their culture and their values, it builds confidence, comfortability, knowledge and skills," said Janice.

Janice's inspiration to start the center came from her love of Montessori learning and her desire to bridge education gaps in the Indigenous community. Her first exposure to Montessori was when she enrolled her youngest son in school. She fell in love with how welcoming they were to her child, and it made her want to create her own learning institution.

With support from organizations like the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation, Montessori American Indian Childcare Center has been able to serve Indigenous youth and families in Saint Paul for more than 10 years.

💭 How does identity shape the way we lead?

In the fourth episode of The Power of Possible: Leadership Edition, Dr. Tashion Macon and Chanda Smith Baker explore the often unspoken weight and responsibility of legacy in leadership.

As the first Black CEO at the Foundation, Chanda reflects on what being “the first” carries: not just visibility, but expectation, complexity and a deep responsibility to open doors wider for those coming next. At the same time, she reframes leadership in a powerful way — moving away from having all the answers, and toward being grounded in community, where answers already exist if you’re willing to listen.

From her early years growing up in a small town in Isanti County to serving as Minnesota’s first female lieutenant governor, Marlene Johnson has consistently centered the importance of education not just as a pathway to opportunity, but as a foundation for strong, connected communities.

It's something she learned from her mother, founder of Isanti County’s historic society, who established a designated education fund at the Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation. She inspired Marlene to make her own impact.

From serving on the board of trustees for the American Foreign Student International Exchange Program to working to close gaps in services to children while lieutenant governor, Marlene's passion for education and culture has always been at the forefront of her service. Whether it's providing scholarships to students at Braham Area Schools or helping create pathways to higher education for girls in rural Kenya through her support of Kakenya's Dream, Marlene's lifelong passion is helping young people thrive.
