Tall Ship Sailing & Shipwreck Diving In Lake Superior -- 5 Wrecks In One Jam-Packed Weekend
Minneapolis-based BSA Venture Crew 820 teamed up with Bayfield, Wisconsin-based BSA Sea Scout Ship Luna 336 for a weekend of sailing and scuba for eight youth and ten adults as they explored five wrecks in Lake Superior, June 2014. Sailing Master Gordon Ringberg and his youth crew from Sea Scout Ship Luna 336 trained the youth scouts from Scuba Crew 820 to rig four of the five sails on the classic two-mast Vagabond Schooner.
BSA Venture Crew 820 arrived Friday, 27 June, and the Sea Scouts hosted the crew on the Abbey Road in Pikes Bay Marina, Wisconsin. The Venture Crew loaded all their backpacks, tents for sleeping on Stockton Island and cold water dive equipment with 26 dive tanks on board the Schooner. Temperatures on Lake Superior change with the wind direction and went from 54 degrees to 44 degrees while diving on the Noquebay. The scouts were prepared for the cold diving temperatures.
“Superior Adventures” out of Bayfield, Wisconsin provided a 20 foot Aquasport, used as a tender alongside the Vagabond 52-foot Schooner “Abbey Road” to exit the water.
The youth rigged and navigated the donated schooner around the tricky Lake Superior en route to the dives sites. The five wrecks are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offered the scouts an opportunity to learn local history and test their diving skills. The wrecks fascinated the young scouts; they were mesmerized by the size of the windlass gears as well as the rocks built into the space between the inside and outside wood hull near the stern used as ballast on the Lucerne.
Between dives, the youths piloted the ship, prepared meals, and even dealt with golf-ball size hail storm that broke three windows on the ship. The crews bonded as they successfully worked together over the weekend, learned valuable new skills and appreciation for history, and made new friends.
We want to thank Sailing Master Gordon Ringberg, Skipper Kristen Gilliland, and Committee Chair Terry Bauer and youth crew members from Sea Scout Ship 336 for hosting this event.
