Jess has been with us since some of our earliest days as a team, and we’ve gotten to watch her help a lot of people through her patience, compassion, and willingness to share her own story with others. She’s someone both participants and teammates know they can count on, and we asked her to share what this work, and her own recovery, mean to her:

“I do this work because I believe in the importance of having built-in support in early recovery. Seeing participants put the work in day over day to change and build healthy routines and coping skills is an honor to be a part of.”

“Peer support is special because it is in a relaxed setting. It’s really all up to the participant what they want to work on or need support in, so I get to show up for people in all sorts of cool ways, which in turn teaches me how to show up for myself better as well.”

“For people in early recovery, I would encourage them to prioritize building healthy relationships with others in recovery. No matter how uncomfortable it feels at first, just keep showing up!”

Outside of work, Jess enjoys concerts, hiking, getting to the gym, and meditating. One of her favorite books is Project Hail Mary, Catzen is one of her favorite local spots, and she even brings her cats on walks using a harness.

We’re grateful to have Jess on our team—thank you for sharing your experience and for the support you bring to so many people.

Congratulations to everyone pictured here, as well as the classmates who chose not to be included in the photo. We’re incredibly proud of this entire class.

One of the most powerful parts of peer support is how lived experience helps others feel understood, connected, and hopeful — and this class brought so much of that into the training space throughout the week. Now, these graduates get to carry that same compassion and lived experience into their work with others.

Thank you to our Director of Research, Marcus Bell, for answering all of our “Science of Recovery” questions, to the Steve Rummler HOPE Network for the overdose response training, and to RS EDEN for stopping by to share job opportunities with the class.

Overall, it was a great training and a great week, and we can’t wait for our paths to cross again.

We are deeply saddened to share the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Nell Hurley.

Nell was a devoted leader in the recovery community for decades, and her impact was felt by countless individuals and organizations. She was known not only for her commitment to this work, but for the compassion, strength, and spirit she brought to everyone around her.

Nell made everyone around her better. She never hesitated to mentor others, and her influence is felt in every corner of our organization. She helped shape not only better leaders and problem-solvers, but better human beings.

Her legacy will live on in the people and communities she helped shape and support.

Our thoughts are with Nell’s husband, William, her son, Jasper, and all who knew and loved her during this difficult time.

Chris has been a steady, trusted presence in peer support—consistently showing up for others and making a real impact—and we asked him to share what this work, and his own recovery, mean to him:

"To me, peer support isn’t just an important part of recovery but an important part in MY recovery. By helping others on their path to wellness, it keeps me engaged on my journey. It also gives me purpose and meaning in a very impactful way. We aren’t just an Uber service or someone to go to recovery meetings with. The scope of our work is much deeper. I have personally seen broken families mended, records cleared, and individuals experiencing chronic homelessness find housing through things that we have worked on together."

"I am a very spiritual person, particularly Native American practices, so ceremonies and other practices are very important to my self-care. I love spending quality time with family. I also enjoy cooking. I’m a huge Timberwolves fan. One of my favorite places in Minnesota is Gooseberry Falls and Splitrock Lighthouse near Duluth. I low-key really like geocaching. I once spent 2 weeks dogsledding the Gunflint Trail in Northen Minnesota, and then the following summer hiked and camped the same trail."

"For people in early recovery, I would remind them to lighten up on themselves and give themselves some room for grace. It’s very common to have a great deal of “icky” feelings about yourself but there is value and you are worth the work and rewards that this journey presents.”

We’re grateful to have Chris on our team—thank you for sharing your experience and the impact you make.

We’d really love to see some familiar faces there.
If you’re around on May 4th, please stop by and say hello!

May the Fourth is almost here.

We’re opening the doors at Amethyst Behavioral Healthcare — and making a bit of an event out of it.

Stop by May 4th from 3–6 PM to check out the space, meet the team, and hang out for a while.

There’ll be games, a photo booth, blue milk, and more. FUKU and Duck Donuts will be serving up some treats!

Bring your people.

May the Fourth be with you.
