Most pregnancy-related deaths are preventable.
So why are Black women still at higher risk?

This is not a coincidence.

Barriers like lack of insurance, provider shortages, discrimination, and fear tied to immigration policies continue to limit access to care.

Black maternal health disparities are not about biology—they are driven by unequal care, bias, and systemic barriers.

At YWCA St. Paul, we believe every woman deserves safe, respectful, and culturally competent care.

During Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17), we’re shining a light on critical issues impacting Black communities. Black women’s pregnancy-related mortality rates are over 3x higher than White women. Access to timely prenatal care saves lives. We must address systemic barriers and inequities to improve maternal and infant health outcomes.

Sexual violence is more common than people think and it’s not just “stranger danger.”

Knowing what consent looks like and how to support survivors can make a real difference.

You don’t need the perfect words—just listen, believe, and respect.

At YWCA St. Paul, we stand with survivors.
You are not alone. 💚

Today, we honor the birthday of Dr. Dorothy Irene Height—a civil rights and women’s rights leader often called the “conscience of the movement.”

For decades, she led with quiet strength—shaping national movements, advising presidents, and opening doors for Black women to lead. Through her work with the National Council of Negro Women and YWCA, she helped advance racial justice and expand opportunity for generations.

Dr. Height showed us that leadership isn’t about recognition—it’s about responsibility. It’s about building bridges, staying grounded in purpose, and lifting others along the way.
Her legacy is not just history—it’s a blueprint.

Today, we celebrate her life—and recommit ourselves to the work she carried forward with such courage, discipline, and purpose.

They raised their voices so we could use ours.
They broke barriers we no longer have to face.
They made space—for us.

This month, we’re honoring the women who came before us and recognizing the impact they’ve had on where we are today.

Featuring:
Rosa Parks – civil rights activist who helped ignite the Montgomery Bus Boycott
Ruth Bader Ginsburg – Supreme Court Justice and advocate for gender equality
Maya Angelou – poet, author, and voice for Black women’s experiences
Dolores Huerta – labor leader and co-founder of the United Farm Workers
Malala Yousafzai – education activist and youngest Nobel Prize winner

March is Women’s History Month.

A time to recognize the women who came before us — who organized, advocated, resisted, and led.

But women’s history is not confined to the past.
It is being written every day.

In boardrooms and classrooms.
In homes and communities.
In movements and quiet acts of courage.

At YWCA St. Paul, we remain committed to eliminating racism and empowering women — not just this month, but always.

When women rise, communities rise.
