What We Do
Teachers are masters of using their imaginations to help kids see things in new ways, to illustrate concepts and make learning interesting. But imagination goes only so far. Sometimes they need some help. That‘s where Nettie & Friends comes in. We fund some of those ideas teachers have and help teachers make possibilities happen for students and teachers in a school with many needs. Wa
nt to show kids how butterflies are born? How do you explain to city kids how big a horse is? Or what a cave looks like? Nettie & Friends helps teachers at Maxfield Elementary Magnet School explore the answers to those questions. But before that, students need to be ready to attend class and navigate the cold winter months safely. Recognizing the high rate of homelessness and families who are in transition, Nettie & Friends maintains a uniform closet at Maxfield School to make sure every student is ready to attend class. First Things First:
Uniforms: Some new, some gently used, the closet is filled with pants, shirts, socks, shoes and other necessities. Underwear: Because when you are young, accidents sometimes happen, we stock clean underwear and socks. Warm Winter Wear: When you live in Minnesota, you need warm winter wear, but when your family is homeless, you may not have had the opportunity to take everything you need. Nettie & Friends makes sure that Maxfield has jackets, hats, mittens and boots on hand to ensure children stay warm throughout the winter.
