🍂 Last Friday, October 2, 2026, we celebrated community in a good way by hosting our Annual Fall Feast! Every spring and fall, we give back to community and extend our gratitude to you all, our community, for giving us the opportunity to be here for 30 years and counting, helping American Indian families thrive.

We honored Elder community member Laura LaPlante for her continued contributions and wisdom she shares with community, shared a meal, bounced in bouncy houses, got our faces painted, had a giveaway, had balloon artists, Mississippi Ojibwe drum group singers, and a photo booth!

We will be closed this upcoming Monday, October 12, 2026, for Indigenous Peoples Day, and we invite you all to our partner Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration at American Indian Magnet School (AIMS). A few of our staff will be there helping to open up the day in a good day with singing. We hope to see you there!

🐻 Join our Elder Advisory Council (EAC) for a Bear Ceremony Teaching, a cultural gathering that prepares us for the Putting the Bears to Sleep Ceremony, a time to welcome the winter of hibernation for people, beings, and the land. Together, we will acknowledge the work being done to restore and care for this land and learn traditional responses to Niigimowinmiiwinzha: the things that seem to get the best of us.

Bear healers will guide participants through teachings on “putting the bears to sleep” and offering gratitude to Mother Earth for our medicines. This session is meant to bring helpers together in a good way.

This is a potluck. Please bring your watecha/bundle, sacred items, a chair, and anything you need to sit comfortably.

- Niigimowinmiiwinzha Teachings — cultural responses to challenges that weigh on us
- Putting the Bears to Sleep — preparing for winter and honoring the land
- Gratitude for Medicines — thanking Mother Earth for the medicines that support our healing

✍ Han/hau, boozhoo, please join us tomorrow, Thursday, October 8, 2026, for "Rooted: A Creative Writing Course Aligned with the Medicine Wheel," from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM, led by Jamie Hudalla, AIFC Employment Counselor.

This month's theme is "Creating Change for the Community" - The fall of our lives is for determining our beliefs and creating a clear vision for future generations. We’ll write pieces that encourage social change—whether local, national, or global. Using Cherie Dimaline’s "The Marrow Thieves" as our guide, we’ll look at how magical realism and dystopian worlds in fiction can be used to fight the current systems in place.

Jamie started as an Employment Counselor with AIFC in July 2024. She has a passion for storytelling and earned her MFA in Creative Writing in 2022. She has taught fiction, poetry, and essay writing at Hollins University and Bethel University. Jamie believes stories have the power to connect us and help us make meaning of our experiences, and she continues to explore how creativity and wellness overlap.

🧡 Yesterday, we wore orange shirts to show our support for Orange Shirt Day, also known as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, for our Canadian relatives.

We wear orange for the survivors and descendants of boarding and residential schools, and for those young ones who didn't make it home. Orange Shirt Day promotes awareness about the Indian boarding/residential school system still impacting Native American communities in the United States and Canada.

Here at AIFC, we help heal our community from negative impacts, like those of the boarding school era, by providing American Indian families with programs and services enriched by traditional American Indian values and culture.
