Today, August 10, is Agent Orange Awareness Day. ๐ŸŽ—๏ธ

On this day in 1961, the U.S. military first tested Agent Orange in South Vietnam. Over the next decade, 20 million gallons of herbicides containing toxic dioxins were sprayed across the regionโ€”leaving a silent, lasting legacy.

For hundreds of thousands of Vietnam veterans and millions of civilians, the war didn't end when they returned home. Decades later, families still face severe cancers, Parkinsonโ€™s, diabetes, and generational health impacts.

Today, we remember those lost, support those still fighting, and stand with affected families.

Purple Heart Day commemorates the creation of our Nationโ€™s oldest decoration for military merit. It was created by Gen. George Washington in 1787 to be presented to soldiers for "๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘ฆ ๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘›๐‘”๐‘ข๐‘™๐‘Ž๐‘Ÿ๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐‘š๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘  ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›" and symbolized the courage and devotion of an American Patriot.

In the 1930's, around the time of Washingtonโ€™s 200th birthday, Gen. Douglas MacArthur persuaded the U.S. War Department to create the Order of the Purple Heart. The award continued to recognize the commendable actions of service members until 1944, when the medal was limited only to those wounded or killed in combat. [DVIDS USMC photo by Cpl. Ana S. We stand with the 50+ organizations who oppose the Taking Benefits from Americaโ€™s Veterans Act. This is the second attempt to pass this horrendous package. We cannot let Republicans take away the benefits veterans have rightfully earned.

Good Shabbos and Happy July 4!!

A revolutionary idea, still relevant today: Washingtonโ€™s 1790 letter to the Touro Synagogue

Newport, Rhode Island was already home to one of Americaโ€™s oldest Jewish communities when President George Washington came to visit in 1790. The cityโ€™s Touro Synagogue had been established before the Revolution, some 27 years earlier. Antisemitism was then flourishing in Europe, and the ancestors of many Newport Jews had fled the Spanish Inquisition, so they sought assurances that wouldnโ€™t happen in the new America.

After his visit, Washington received letters from leading citizens, including one from Moses Seixas, a leader in the Touro Synagogue. The timing was significant as the Bill of Rights had yet to be added to the Constitution and the idea of religious freedom was being hotly debated.

The Touro Synagogue letter thanked G-d for keeping Washington safe and for letting him create a nation with โ€ One, the letter continued, that afforded equality and liberties of conscience to all.

Washingtonโ€™s reply strongly supported religious freedoms for non-Christians: โ€œF๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ โ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘๐‘–๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐บ๐‘œ๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘›๐‘š๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ก ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘ˆ๐‘›๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘‘ ๐‘†๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘ , ๐‘คโ„Ž๐‘–๐‘โ„Ž ๐‘”๐‘–๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘  ๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘๐‘–๐‘”๐‘œ๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘ฆ ๐‘›๐‘œ ๐‘ ๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›, ๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘๐‘ข๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘›๐‘œ ๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘ ๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘๐‘’, ๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘ž๐‘ข๐‘–๐‘Ÿ๐‘’๐‘  ๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘ก ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘ฆ ๐‘คโ„Ž๐‘œ ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘ฃ๐‘’ ๐‘ข๐‘›๐‘‘๐‘’๐‘Ÿ ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘  ๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘ โ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘™๐‘‘ ๐‘‘๐‘’๐‘š๐‘’๐‘Ž๐‘› ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘š๐‘ ๐‘’๐‘™๐‘ฃ๐‘’๐‘  ๐‘Ž๐‘  ๐‘”๐‘œ๐‘œ๐‘‘ ๐‘๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘ง๐‘’๐‘›๐‘ , ๐‘–๐‘› ๐‘”๐‘–๐‘ฃ๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘–๐‘ก ๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘Ž๐‘™๐‘™ ๐‘œ๐‘๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›๐‘  ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’๐‘–๐‘Ÿ ๐‘’๐‘“๐‘“๐‘’๐‘๐‘ก๐‘ข๐‘Ž๐‘™ ๐‘ ๐‘ข๐‘๐‘๐‘œ๐‘Ÿ๐‘ก,โ€ he wrote.
