Fishers & Farmers Partnership We support farmer leadership and collaborative action, so farms and fish thrive together

Fishers & Farmers Partnership For the Upper Mississippi River Basin is a self-directed group of non-government organizations, tribal organizations, and state and federal agencies united to add value to farms while protecting, restoring, and enhancing the 30,700 miles of rivers and streams of the Upper Mississippi River Basin. We work for flexible, collaborative relationships between landowners, ag

riculture, and conservation organizations to empower landowners to act for themselves and the greater good.

A huge supporter of the Peno Creek funded project was the Scherder family!

The Scherder family is keeping Peno Creek clean for the next generation by farming with care—using no‑till, cover crops, and practices that protect soil and keep nutrients out of the water. Working with neighbors and partners, they’re making sure their grandkids can enjoy a healthier creek for years to come.

Great story on one of our amazing partners in Illinois, Greg Thoren and the Jo Daviess County Soil and Water Health Coalition.

"The work they do is at the heart of the "farmer-led movement," a grassroots initiative to put farmers at the center of agricultural innovation, rather than top-down academics or government officials."

The 'farmer-led movement' aims to shape the agricultural landscape — by strengthening soils and building community

Reaching conservation goals takes both the right resources and the right people. Funding and technical support give farmers what they need to try new practices. Farmers bring the land, the knowledge, and the willingness to make real change.

When resources empower farmers, and farmers work together across a watershed, healthier soil and cleaner water follow. Missouri Dept. of Conservation

Funding from Fishers & Farmers helps farmers start, prove, and grow conservation practices, while supporting monitoring and local leadership. The result is measurable soil and water improvements that benefit both agriculture and aquatic ecosystems.

As part of the FFP Video Series, we now head to Peno Creek in Missouri.

The Missouri Dept. of Conservation knew that restoring the Peno Creek Watershed would require working directly with the people who live and farm there.

This video features a multi‑generation family farm, in operation since the 1960s, that has implemented nearly every major best management practice to protect soil, water, and wildlife. Their partnership with MDC shows how collaboration and long‑term stewardship can strengthen both the land and the community.

Respectful listening was the foundation of successful partnerships in the Bourbeuse–Meramec watershed. By taking the time to listen first—to farmers’ goals, challenges, and knowledge—organizations built trust and worked alongside landowners rather than directing them. That shared understanding turned conversations into lasting partnerships and made meaningful conservation possible.
