What if protecting the Boundary Waters started with a beer at Dual Citizen Brewing? 🙃

Federal protections for the Boundary Waters have taken a hit in recent weeks. Last month, safeguards for 225,000 acres surrounding the BWCA were overturned. And just this past week, Congress moved forward with steps that could bring Twin Metals toxic mining closer to new mineral leases near the Boundary Waters.

So now it’s Minnesota’s turn to respond!

This week, the House Appropriations Committee released its 2027 spending bill for the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies. Buried in the bill is a provision that would transfer two federal mineral leases connected to Twin Metals.

These leases would move the project one step closer to a proposed copper-nickel mine near the Boundary Waters.

The proposal would allow the leases to proceed without environmental review, and would limit opportunities for public input and judicial review.

This is a significant change to how these leases are handled and raises serious concerns about protections for the Boundary Waters watershed.

With these developments in Washington, we need leaders who will stand up for clean water and public lands. That is why 2026 is critical.
