Underdog was established in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie, who saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the “underdogs.” Today, not only do we continue to serve our local community by taking in overlooked animals, but Underdog Rescue is dedicated to rescuing commercial breeding survivors. Dogs that survive life in a commercial breeding facility frequently require additio

nal medical care, socialization, and teaching of basic dog skills, even though many are adults. Underdog volunteers bring these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like. Since 2000, Underdog Rescue has been supported by hundreds of volunteers and rescued more than 11,000 animals! Run almost solely by volunteers, Underdog Rescue provides loving foster homes, proper veterinary care and daily necessities and niceties for our rescue animals, while working hard to find each a permanent, safe and loving home. In 2018, Underdog Rescue spent over $300,000 on veterinary care and will spend even more in 2019. At any given point, Underdog Rescue has approximately 175 animals in our care. Each of these animals typically receive, as needed:

• Spay/Neuter, including hernia or navel repair, mammary tumor removal, et. al.
• Rabies and Distemper vaccines and boosters
• Heartworm testing and treatment
• Microchip
• Teeth cleaning & dental exam with extensive extractions
• Orthopedic surgery and aftercare, if needed
• Specialty exams based upon medical condition
• Surgeries and mass removals
• Food and shelter
• Supplies to ensure the foster can provide the best possible care (crate, bedding, toys, leash, collar, etc.)

Welcome to the adoptable Dogs page, Gigi!

Gigi is about 12 pounds and thought to be a collie mix about 3 months old. Gigi is a sweet little puppy with a gentle personality, a playful streak, and just enough sass to occasionally demand to be carried like the tiny princess she is. She can be a little shy at first, but once she warms up, she’s all cuddles, zoomies, and “helping” with whatever you’re doing. Gigi loves kids, dogs, cats, toys, sticks, snacks, and basically any activity that involves attention or fun. She’s smart, learning quickly from her foster siblings, and is currently mastering important life skills like fetch and convincing humans to chauffeur her when walks become too exhausting. With her loving heart and hilarious puppy antics, Gigi is guaranteed to keep her future family laughing, snuggling, and completely wrapped around her little paw.

Here at Underdog, we know some of the animals in our care have had a hard life until recently. That’s why we love giving them each a new bed, of their very own, while the acclimate in their foster home ❤️

Kuranda Beds are an amazing choice due to their durability and added protection of a 1-Year Chew Proof Warranty.
They are easy to clean and sanitize which also makes it easy to potty train, reuse for the next pup in need, and teach foster dogs about the good life.

The beds elevated sleep surface helps regulate body temperature, both in warmer and cooler months.
The orthopedic design alleviates pressure points on joints.
Quality sleep reduces stress which keeps animals healthy and feeling good while they await their forever homes.

The next 5 items purchased off our Wish List will be matched and sent to an Underdog in need. We’d sure be grateful for your support.

Henri was surrendered in Texas from a backyard breeder. He lived outside in the hot, hot Texas sun.

Thanks in part to we were alerted to a group of frenchies in need. We said yes knowing they’d likely have some medical conditions because a bulldog who lives outside most certainly will have some. For Henri, it was his eyes.

If you’ve seen our last few weeks of posts, you’ll notice a common theme: bulldogs have eye troubles.
Lack of medical attention for the breed is just simply problematic. It’s not a breed that is free of health troubles.

For Henri here, he had a growth in his right eye. Our local vets referred him to an ophthalmologist. He had a haired dermoid growing, which is a benign tumor, which was complicated by irritation, inflammation, and scarring. Haired dermoids are congenital malformations where small skin tissue, including hair follicles, grow in abnormal locations - in this case, on his eye ball. For Henri, he couldn’t blink completely due to the location and the hair follicles rubbing against the cornea causing scarring and pain. He also had dry eye due to not being able to blink fully.

How long had he been like that? Hard to say, but likely most of his 3 year life. Lucky for him, Underdog didn’t stop until we got to the bottom of this, which led him to eye surgery last week. His surgery alone cost $1,896.82 not including the pre-surgical visit, medications, nor his follow up surgeries of a neuter and dental.
Even at his young age, he had a grade 3 of 4 dental disease, was missing 6 teeth, and had a mass on his ni**le. Needless to say, he’s a few more teeth down, a ni**le off, and successfully neutered - all in 4 months time!

His vet bills total far more than any adoption fee could begin to cover. Your donations today will help us offset the necessary surgeries to get Henri feeling his best - almost certainly better than he ever has! He’s the sweetest, goofiest guy and seeing him thrive here in MN makes it all worth it.
Thank you for your support. All funds raised today go towards Henri and his successful surgeries 🥰 Henri sure is grateful for team Underdog!

Welcome to the adoptable dogs page, Aloka!

Aloka the Chihuahua was born on 1/8/21 and weighs 7 pounds. Aloka is a simple man with simple pleasures: belly rubs, quiet corners, soft laps, and being told he’s a very good boy. He’s potty trained, walks beautifully on a leash, rides well in the car, and gets along with respectful kids, cats, and dogs—especially the small ones who understand the importance of personal space and snack‑sharing etiquette.
