Underdog was established in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie, who saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the “underdogs.” Today, not only do we continue to serve our local community by taking in overlooked animals, but Underdog Rescue is dedicated to rescuing commercial breeding survivors. Dogs that survive life in a commercial breeding facility frequently require additional medical care, socialization, and teaching of basic dog skills, even though many are adults. Underdog volunteers bring these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like. Since 2000, Underdog Rescue has been supported by hundreds of volunteers and rescued more than 11,000 animals! Run almost solely by volunteers, Underdog Rescue provides loving foster homes, proper veterinary care and daily necessities and niceties for our rescue animals, while working hard to find each a permanent, safe and loving home. In 2018, Underdog Rescue spent over $300,000 on veterinary care and will spend even more in 2019. At any given point, Underdog Rescue has approximately 175 animals in our care. Each of these animals typically receive, as needed:

• Spay/Neuter, including hernia or navel repair, mammary tumor removal, et. al.
• Rabies and Distemper vaccines and boosters
• Heartworm testing and treatment
• Microchip
• Teeth cleaning & dental exam with extensive extractions
• Orthopedic surgery and aftercare, if needed
• Specialty exams based upon medical condition
• Surgeries and mass removals
• Food and shelter
• Supplies to ensure the foster can provide the best possible care (crate, bedding, toys, leash, collar, etc.)

Meet Maggie May, a 10-pound Coton de Tulear born 9/1/2024 who’s a sweet, playful girl with so much love to give! ❤️ She may be timid around new people and unfamiliar things, but once she trusts you, she transforms into an affectionate little lap dog who loves being close to her favorite humans. Maggie enjoys toys, treats, car rides, and walks, and she’s making wonderful progress with her leash manners. She’s doing well with her potty routine using both potty pads and the outdoors, and she’ll thrive in a calm, patient home with older, considerate kids who will give her time to build confidence. Maggie gets along well with other dogs, can be a little vocal, and needs a securely fenced yard to keep her safe while she settles into her forever home!

His puppy-dog eyes and wagging tail will melt your heart as he discovers how wonderful it feels to be loved. Giles is playful, goofy, and affectionate, and he’s growing braver every day as he learns to trust and explore the world around him. He’s looking for a loving family who will continue building his confidence, help him with puppy training and potty training, and give this precious little guy his turn to shine!

Meet Frankie, a 22-pound Border Terrier mix born 8/1/2024 who’s a happy, goofy boy with a big heart and an eagerness to please! ❤️ He loves walks, playing fetch, squeaky toys, head scratches, and spending time with his favorite people. Frankie is intelligent, playful, and food-motivated, making him a fun training partner as he continues working on leash manners and crate training. He can become fearful when left alone, so he’d love a family who can spend plenty of time with him, and his mischievous side means countertops and unattended sandwiches should be kept out of reach! Frankie gets along well with other dogs but is not a fit for a home with children, and he needs a physically fenced yard and a family ready to continue his training.

Meet Lemon, a 19-pound Cocker spaniel mix born 10/1/2022 who’s a sweet, goofy girl with a big heart and lots of love to give! ❤️ She loves cuddling with her people, playing with toys, exploring outdoors, and running around the yard chasing squirrels and bunnies. Lemon enjoys walks and car rides, is crate- and leash-trained, and would benefit from continued training to help her stay calm when excited by people and other dogs on walks. She’s friendly with people and gets along well with other dogs, but her strong prey drive means a home without small animals like cats, rabbits, or birds would be best. Lemon can be vocal when she spots activity outside and needs a physically fenced yard, but she can happily be your one-and-only pup or share her home with another dog!

Meet Isle, an 11.6-pound Dachshund born 5/23/2025 who’s a sweet, snuggly boy happiest when he’s close to his favorite humans! ❤️ He loves lap cuddles, neighborhood walks, chewing on bones, and playing with his favorite stuffed toys. Isle can be skittish around new people and unfamiliar sounds, and he’s quite vocal when he thinks something needs announcing, so he’ll benefit from a patient family who can help him feel secure. He gets along well with other dogs and cats, is crate- and leash-trained, and is still working on potty training with a consistent schedule. Isle needs a securely fenced yard and a home with Dachshund experience, ideally with adults or older, considerate kids who will respect his boundaries and give him plenty of love!

Meet Summit, a happy, outgoing Dachshund puppy born 4/10/2026 who’s full of curiosity, personality, and some seriously impressive puppy zoomies! ❤️ This social little guy is adjusting well to home life, loves exploring his surroundings, and is eager to learn how to be the best companion ever. He’s making great progress with potty training on a consistent schedule and is learning leash skills and commands like “leave it” and “drop it.” Summit loves playing, investigating everything around him, and cuddling up for a nap after a busy day, but he’ll need patience and consistency as he learns to settle in his crate and eat independently from his bowl. This smart, affectionate boy is ready for a loving family with Dachshund experience to help him grow into the wonderful lifelong companion he’s meant to be!

Check in from these girls who stole so many hearts ❤️

The golden girls (Dani & Dixie) are settling in nicely. They are both very sweet. Dixie loves to play ball. Dani loves to eat, but is very easy-going and goes with the flow. They just learned how to get up on the sofa yesterday and boy did they love it💖

We love seeing pups settle in, get comfy, and learn about being an Underdog!

“I think Paisley just had a puppy!!” 😳

Not the message we thought we read from Paisleys foster home, but here we are!

Paisley recently came into rescue and has been a shy girl, learning the ways of living in a home. She came to us by way of a breeder and like every Underdog, we promised her a night, safe and loving future.

We didn’t know she’d have to wait a few months before we could start thinking about her forever future!

Anytime we rescue a pregnant mama, it’s filled with mixed emotions. Excited because, come on, how cute! But what sad because her body had to do this one last time - and we would have fed her more, had we known!

We’re also a little happy that she snuggled that belly in because had her breeder known, she would still be there. Still stuck in the cycle of breeding. Still dreaming of a way out.

Paisley had three pups, but only one survived. We want to hold space for her two stillborn pups.

We will be closely watching this little male pup and hope he grows and thrives and becomes an outgoing guy ❤️

Lowry and his big boy teeth are on the adoptable dogs page!

Meet Lowry, a 7-pound Dachshund puppy born 6/6/2026 who’s a playful, goofy little sweetheart with plenty of puppy energy and cuddles to share! ❤️ He loves being close to his people, getting held, playing with squeaky toys, and enjoying adorable zoomies before snuggling up on the couch for a nap. Lowry loves other dogs and would enjoy having a furry sibling, although it isn’t a requirement. He’s crate-trained, making great progress with potty training and leash skills, and is a fast learner who loves treats and positive reinforcement. Lowry is ready for a loving family who can keep up with his puppy adventures, continue his training, and give him all the affection his little Dachshund heart desires!

Meet Cuyon, a 10-pound Chihuahua mix born 9/1/2021 who’s a goofy, intelligent Southern gentleman with a serious talent for wiggles, play bows, and cuddles! ❤️ He may take time to warm up, but once you’ve earned his trust, he’ll happily invade your personal space and soak up all the affection. Cuyon loves walks, sniffing new things, squeaky toys, and treats, though he’s working on sharing his toys and can be vocal when he thinks he’s missing out on something delicious. He gets along well with other dogs and cats, is crate- and leash-trained, and would thrive with older, considerate kids who respect his boundaries. Cuyon requires a securely fenced yard and a patient home that appreciates his protective Chihuahua personality, his occasional grumbles, and his very strong cuddle standards!
