Underdog was established in 2000 by Shannon McKenzie, who saw a need to help the dogs and cats often overlooked by other rescuers, the “underdogs.” Today, not only do we continue to serve our local community by taking in overlooked animals, but Underdog Rescue is dedicated to rescuing commercial breeding survivors. Dogs that survive life in a commercial breeding facility frequently require additio

nal medical care, socialization, and teaching of basic dog skills, even though many are adults. Underdog volunteers bring these pets into their homes to show them what life as a dog and life with kind humans is like. Since 2000, Underdog Rescue has been supported by hundreds of volunteers and rescued more than 11,000 animals! Run almost solely by volunteers, Underdog Rescue provides loving foster homes, proper veterinary care and daily necessities and niceties for our rescue animals, while working hard to find each a permanent, safe and loving home. In 2018, Underdog Rescue spent over $300,000 on veterinary care and will spend even more in 2019. At any given point, Underdog Rescue has approximately 175 animals in our care. Each of these animals typically receive, as needed:

• Spay/Neuter, including hernia or navel repair, mammary tumor removal, et. al.
• Rabies and Distemper vaccines and boosters
• Heartworm testing and treatment
• Microchip
• Teeth cleaning & dental exam with extensive extractions
• Orthopedic surgery and aftercare, if needed
• Specialty exams based upon medical condition
• Surgeries and mass removals
• Food and shelter
• Supplies to ensure the foster can provide the best possible care (crate, bedding, toys, leash, collar, etc.)

Welcome to the adoptable dogs page, Albany!

Albany is a Maltese x Yorkie who was born on 10/1/20 Ave weighs 8 pounds. she’s a delicate little soul who has survived more than she lets on. Missing most of her teeth, she sports a permanently peeking tongue. Albany is very fearful of human contact and still prefers to keep her distance, often scampering away when approached. But she’s slowly learning that safety exists, and she’s beginning to show tiny glimmers of trust: a tail wag, a quick dash toward her foster to sniff a hand, then a speedy retreat. With time, love, and a confident canine friend, Albany will continue to grow into the sweet, quirky little companion she’s meant to be.

Volunteers of the month: Genni and Brandi ❤️

We’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Genni for helping wrangle, coordinate, and communicate for our adoption events! Genni has been doing this behind the scenes for years and we are so grateful for her time. She’s staying on board doing admin roles, so she won’t be far, but will be traveling more and enjoying her love for photography along the way.

Help us welcome Brandi to the events team, who will be taking over starting in September for Genni. Brandi has been a foster home for years for us and was a whelping foster for mama Patita and her pups recently. She has a love for French Bulldogs and so does her family. We’re excited to have her on the team to help lead our events!

Please join us in thanking Genni for her years of volunteer time and welcome Brandi! We are so grateful for you both 🙌

Education spotlight: “What Breed Is It?”

This is a common question we get, so let’s discuss!
Here at Underdog, we can never guarantee the breed of a dog. In fact, within each dogs bio, at the bottom of the page, we state just that. Sometimes, dogs are surrendered to us from commercial breeders, so they tell us a breed, but even then, we cannot guarantee it. Dogs from shelter, with a notation in the bio that says “mix,” we most certainly cannot guarantee.

Why is that? Because they haven’t told us 🤪 in most cases, we don’t know either parent, so your guess is as good as ours! We make our best, honest educated guess to give interested applicants insights on traits and personality of the dogs. We will never pick a breed to make a dog more adoptable, because our goal is a successful adoption.

DNA tests are expensive 💰 and it is not within our budgets (nor time) to do a DNA test on each animal in our care.

So what does that mean for adopters?
BIOS! Read the bio!
Our foster homes are the ones writing the description and need for each animal in our care. Just because it says it’s a French Bulldog mix does not mean it’s going to be a lazy dog. The bio is the place to learn more and ensure the dog is a match for you.
Neither breeds nor photos listed at rescues should be the sole deciding factor in which dog you choose to adopt. Read the bio, learn about the dog, ensure an honest thought of “is this dog’s personality a match for me?” before applying.

Knowing what breed types you like is great.
Knowing what kind of dogs you find cute is great.
But what is needed is reading the bio to ensure a match.

Adorable, adoptable Reese, shown here, is a perfect example. If breed choice of “Small Southern Mutt” was an option, that’s what we would select 😂

Welcome to the adoptable dogs page, Oriole!

Oriole the Pomeranian was born on 6/9/18 and weighs 13 pounds. Oriole is a sweet and snuggly guy with a soft coat and an even softer heart. He loves being close to his people, whether he’s curled up beside you, enjoying belly rubs, or soaking up cuddles. Oriole does great with other dogs and would thrive in a calm, quieter home without commotion or children. He is crate trained, leash trained, and very food motivated, though he does need a soft diet since he only has one tooth remaining. This gentle little guy is ready to find a patient, loving family where he can feel safe, adored, and always close by your side.

Welcome to the adoptable dogs page, Margot!

Margot is an adorable French Bulldog born 2/1/2022 who has overcome a difficult past and is now ready to enjoy the happy, spoiled life she deserves. After years of neglected ear infections and surgery that left her with some hearing loss, Margot hasn’t let anything slow her down and is happily learning hand signals while staying closely connected to her people. She is affectionate, playful, incredibly social, and truly believes everyone she meets is a potential new best friend. Margot is potty trained, crate trained, leash trained, knows basic cues, rides well in the car, and is wonderfully food motivated, making her eager to continue learning. She does not require another dog or a physical fence, and she’d love a family who will include her in daily life while keeping in mind that, like many French Bulldogs, she is heat sensitive.

Welcome to the adoptable dogs page, Peppa!

Born 6/1/2024, this adorable 16-pound French Bulldog has the cutest little piglet face—and the grunts to match! Peppa is a sweet, loyal girl who bonds deeply with her person and, once she trusts you, becomes an affectionate little shadow who loves following you from room to room. She can be timid and easily startled, but she’s making progress every day and is discovering the joys of zoomies, treats, exploring outside, and even the occasional adventure through the snow. Peppa is crate trained, nearly potty trained, and rides well in the car.
