Mission 29:11 Reentry

Mission 29:11 Reentry Via mentorship, we connect those coming out of incarceration with a healthy, supportive community. That promise guides our work.

Mission 29:11 Reentry was founded by Tim Dorway approximately three years after his release from the Minnesota Department of Corrections. Even with an amazing support network and many resources before him, he came home to closed doors, the realities of unemployment, temporary homelessness, barriers and the challenges of living in a world that says it believes in second chances but finds all kinds

of ways not to live them. In Jeremiah 29:11, after years and years of banishment and exile, the Lord assures us of His plans for us and promises hope and a future. That passage was Dorway’s go-to scripture throughout his incarceration and after, especially in moments of despair, anxiety and fear. Today, Mission 29:11 is represented by a diverse Board and volunteers, all of whom have connections to the carceral system and reentry, be that through their own lived experiences, their careers or through their loved ones.

Five years ago today, a young man I tutored at MCF-Moose Lake lost his life to gun violence in South Minneapolis. Paris was a positive soul and in his twenties when he was my student. He frustrated the heck out of me some days and made me laugh others. This world was better with him in it.

Community matters. And that’s why our work is so important. RIP, Mr. Love. You are missed by your family and children.

Aaron is SO talented and we were blessed to have him as a part of our team at FCI-Sandstone. As we were leaving the facility, one of the incarcerated men approached us and told us he could hear Aaron’s music from down the unit hallway and he asked a staff person if he could go take part. And he did.

We got to spend a day and a half with approximately 60 incarcerated men at the Sandstone federal prison this week. Our takeaways…..

Jesus is behind those walls with the men.

So much talent exists there, talent waiting to live lives of redemption and hope.

With the love, encouragement and discipleship of our faith communities, those men are going to succeed.

Let’s love like Jesus.

What a difference one month can make.

Last month, a young man from southern Minnesota walked into his first Mission 29:11 Reentry Breakfast alone. He was carrying the weight of isolation, loss, rejection, and fear. A friend of our ministry had encouraged him to come, but showing up was still a courageous step.

As he sat by himself, one of our mentors noticed him. This mentor has been walking alongside men in prison for nearly fifty years. He did what mentors do: he sat beside him, welcomed him, and reminded him without many words that he did not have to sit alone.

Today, at this month’s Reentry Breakfast, that same young man returned.

This time, he came over smiling ear-to-ear, eager to share about his month. He talked about meeting with a pastor, attending worship services, and hearing messages on anger and suffering that were exactly what he needed to hear.

One month ago, fear had him feeling like his skin was crawling.

Today, he could not stop talking about hope, connection, and next steps.

This is why we gather. This is why mentorship matters. This is why a warm welcome can be more than kindness; it can be the beginning of belonging.

At Mission 29:11 Reentry, we believe no one should walk the reentry journey alone.

We love God’s little signs of hope and encouragement. This brother in Christ contacted us prior to his release from prison and wanted info about our events and support. Chris has a loving community supporting him in his reentry. Today, he signed this paperwork on his new home. Praise God!
