Thank you to Tonia Dudley for sharing this information and much more that she discovered! Tonia and her sister reside in Kelsey Breshears old house!

Pictured is a cover from The Crisis, the official magazine of the NAACP. This copy belonged to Kelsy Beshears, and was graciously donated to our museum by Tonia Dudley. Kelsy Beshears was a Civil Rights-era activist who was instrumental in helping organize the local movement in St. Joseph, Missouri. Featured in this October, 1967 issue of The Crisis is the poet and Civil Rights activist, Pauli Murray. Pauli writes in this issue - “One person plus one typewriter constitutes a movement.”
