Charlie's human was transitioning into an assisted living home that didn't allow pets. After years of having his beloved sidekick by his side, he had to make the heartbreaking decision to surrender Charlie to Grey Face Rescue. And following Charlie's intake, this is what he did.
He shut down.
He had just lost his human. The person he knew, loved, and trusted. His whole world had changed, and he had no idea why.
I think sometimes we forget just how deeply animals feel these changes.
What a lot of people don't know is that one of the biggest reasons we started our Grey Face Gives Program was to help prevent situations where people are forced to surrender their animals simply because they can't afford food or supplies. By helping those families keep their pets, we're also able to keep our doors open for situations like Charlie's. Situations where, despite how much someone loves their animal, keeping them just isn't an option.
It's also why we seldom pull animals from shelters and rarely bring animals in from out of state. Not because those animals don't deserve help, but because we want to remain available for the people in our own community who have nowhere else to turn.
People like Charlie's human. I can't imagine how painful it must be to leave behind an animal who has been by your side for years. Especially when you're already going through such a major life transition yourself and I think that's something we don't talk about enough.
Sometimes surrendering an animal isn't about someone no longer wanting them. Sometimes it's about someone loving them enough to make an incredibly painful decision when life leaves them with no other choice.
I guess you could say this is our specialty at Grey Face. Helping families who are transitioning into assisted living, nursing homes, or hospice find a safe place for their beloved senior animals.
We know we can't take away the heartbreak of saying goodbye. But if we can make that decision even a tiny bit easier by giving someone peace of mind that their animal will be safe, comfortable, loved, and well cared for, then we're doing exactly what we set out to do. And for the animals, we do everything we can to help them through that transition, too.
Charlie, we know you miss your human. We know your world has changed. But I promise you, we're going to do everything we can to find you someone who will love you just as much as your human did for so many years.
Because that's what you deserve. And that's why Grey Face Rescue exists.
