👀 WATCH WEDNESDAY: Why Do Police Establish a Perimeter?

Have you ever seen police vehicles blocking off an area and wondered why?

When officers establish a perimeter, it's usually for one important reason: to help keep people safe while officers manage an incident.

A perimeter can help:

🚔 Protect Officers — It provides officers with defined areas to monitor while responding to a potentially dangerous situation.

🛡️ Protect the Public — Keeping people away from an active scene can prevent them from accidentally entering an unsafe area.

🏠 Protect Victims & Witnesses — A controlled area can help officers safely move victims, witnesses, and other people away from potential danger.

🔎 Protect Evidence — Limiting access to an area can help preserve evidence that may be important to an investigation.

📍 Control the Scene — A perimeter gives officers space to coordinate resources and respond to changing circumstances.

You may be asked to stay back, use an alternate route, or remain inside your home or business while officers work.

It may be inconvenient, but there's a reason behind the tape and patrol cars.

Please follow officers' directions and give them the space they need to do their job safely.

When you see a member of the SJPD Traffic Unit, you might think they're simply watching for speeding drivers—but there's much more to their job.

The Traffic Unit plays an important role in keeping our roadways safe through enforcement, investigations, and education.

🚗 Crash Investigations
Traffic officers investigate serious and complex crashes, documenting evidence and working to determine what happened.

🚦 Traffic Enforcement
Speeding, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and other dangerous behaviors can put everyone on the road at risk. Traffic enforcement helps encourage safer driving habits.

🍺 Impaired-Driving Enforcement
Officers work to identify and remove impaired drivers from our roadways, helping prevent crashes and protect our community.

📚 Traffic Safety & Education
The Traffic Unit also works with the community to promote safe driving practices and raise awareness about roadway safety.

🏍️ Specialized Training & Expertise
Traffic officers receive specialized training that helps them handle complex crashes, traffic-related incidents, and roadway safety concerns.

The goal isn't simply to write tickets—it's to reduce crashes, prevent injuries, and help everyone get home safely.
