The number of northern Minnesota moose is the highest since 2011, when the population was midway through a steep decline, according to DNR estimates from its annual January survey. However, the population is still nearly half of what it was at its 2006 peak.

No matter what the calendar says, or how far the mercury has fallen, ice conditions can be highly variable. Just recently, a vehicle and a person on foot broke through the ice in the Hinckley area.

“The two incidents were good reminders that no matter how cold the weather or how late in the winter, always check the ice prior to traveling on lakes,” Said CO Bret Grundmeier.

Don’t rely on secondhand reports – check the thickness for yourself!

Time outdoors is good for the soul. For many of us, there’s no better way to spend that time than hunting deer with family and friends. It’s a great way to create lifelong memories and pass along to younger generations the things that are truly important. As you head out, remember it’s up to every hunter to keep hunting the safe sport that it is. One of the best ways to do that is to always follow the basic rules of safe fi****ms handling:

• Treat every firearm as if it’s loaded.
• Always control the muzzle.
• Be sure of your target and what’s beyond it.
• Put your finger on the trigger only when you’re ready to shoot.
