PechaKucha Night is for creativity and not for profit. Presentations are 20 images x 20 seconds each, and the slides advance whether you're ready or not! Many cities often lack spaces where creative people can share their work, so PechaKucha Nights are about exposing the hidden creativity in a city. These events are held in over 900 cities globally.

Rounding out the speakers for PechaKucha Volume 36 is Dawn Maverick. Here is Dawn's description of herself.

My name is Dawn Maverick and I'm a twenty-two year old college student at Lake Michigan College. I work in a tattoo shop doing piercings and eventually will be doing tattoos. I do art, I sing, dance and do photography and modeling. I'm currently working on two books and I want to be able to share my creativity with people and make great connections.

No stranger to the PK Stage, Jamie Balkin serves as the Director of Events for Krasl Art Center. Additionally, she serves as a City Commissioner for the City of Coloma. She is a daughter, wife and mom as well as an entrepreneur successfully operating a side hustle eBay store. One of her key roles in life is organizing events from large to small, from intimate family gatherings to the annual Krasl Art Fair on the Bluff.

Anna Weber is an applied educational neuroscience specialist and teacher residing in Coloma with her family. She has worked as an election inspector and been a contributing writer in both The Herald-Palladium and the Tri-City Record. When she's not teaching, she's learning or publishing books as an indie author.

For the first time ever, we have a local meteorologist joining us as one of our presenters.

Emmett Twomey is a meteorologist for ABC 57 in South Bend, IN. He is responsible for forecasting weather five days a week from Monday to Friday morning for the Michiana area. This is his first Pecha Kucha event and he is pumped to be a part of it! He loves to build LEGO sets, watch (sometimes begrudgingly) Chicago Sports, take a walk around the East Race trail, or chase all kinds of weather. He is originally from Chicagoland and went to college at Valparaiso University!

Another speaker joining us on Thursday evening is Morgan Bruntsing.

Morgan Vance's journey began in Fall of 2012 as a high school freshman on the Average Joes - SJHS's Robotics team, sparking a lifelong passion for the program. After graduating from SJHS, she went to Michigan Technological University getting her degree in Supply Chain and Operations Management. After college, she moved back to her home of Southwest MI, working in industry. Looking for a more fulfilling career, she started as the St. Joe Robotics District Coordinator, and Co-Coaches the Average Joes with her husband. Beyond robotics, she enjoys giving back to the community through St. Joseph Lions Club, and spending time in the summer at Lions Park Beach.

You won't want to miss this dynamic duo! They will be sharing their story on Thursday, May 21 at 7:00 pm for PechaKucha Volume 36 at the Shadowland Ballroom.

Meet Jessa and Hazel Calderwood.
Jessa Calderwood is a chemist at LECO Corporation, robotics coach, exchange-student host parent, board-game enthusiast, gardener, and part-time chauffeur for her three kids. She and her husband, Jeff, started taking their children hiking as soon as they could walk, and by age six their youngest was tackling 10-mile mountain adventures. When she’s not in the lab or on a trail, Jessa enjoys sports, reading, and convincing her family that “this hike will be fun” despite the weather forecast.

Joining her is her youngest child, Hazel, a fourth grader who provides the family’s “slightly more dramatic” perspective on their hiking adventures. Hazel loves soccer, art, dance, robotics, music, reading, and occasionally hiking with her family. She’s also known for dyeing her hair a different color before every major hiking trip — partly for style, and partly so they can spot her on the trail.

Meet Chris Britton, another of the speakers, joining us on Thursday evening at 7:00 pm at Shadowland Ballroom to share his story.

Chris Britton is the Executive Director of New Heights CCDA in Benton Heights, Michigan, where he leads community development efforts focused on transportation barriers, food insecurity, and long-term household stability. Through programs like New Heights Auto Ministry, the Community Food Network, and the Laundry Hub, Chris works at the intersection of direct service, relationship-based community development, and social enterprise. In addition to his local work, Chris has been involved in social and human services and humanitarian efforts in communities around the world. He is passionate about helping communities rethink how impact is measured and how meaningful change is created.
