Here’s the paradox: sometimes the best way to move forward is to pause and call a timeout.

That’s exactly what we’re doing Tuesday.

Leaders from across St. Joseph are gathering for Coaches’ Timeout to have an honest conversation about the culture of our community, what we learned from the Community Culture Survey, and what each of us can do about it.

CALL A TIMEOUT.
Pause long enough to pay attention to where we are.

COME TOGETHER.
Get around the table with people who care about our community.

GET A STRATEGY.
Talk honestly about where we want to go and what we can do within our own spheres of influence.

MOVE THE NEEDLE.
None of us can change the culture of an entire community alone. But all of us have a piece of it we can influence.

Tuesday, September 1 | 11:00 AM–12:30 PM
Lunch provided.

Come by yourself, but better yet, bring a team.

We need all RSVPs by noon Sunday.

Respect starts with knowing where someone truly is. Avoiding truth is not kindness.

When legendary North Carolina Tar Heels women's soccer coach Anson Dorrance joined us in the City of Coaches last February, he reminded us that the original idea of a coach was "a covered carriage that takes a person of importance from where they are to where they want or need to go."

You can't help people move forward if you aren't willing to understand where they actually are.

That's why we conducted the Community Culture Survey. Not to criticize St. Joseph. Not to dwell on what's wrong. But to listen to our people, understand our present reality, and begin an honest conversation about the future we want to build together.

Next Tuesday, we're calling a Coaches' Timeout.

We'll look at what our community told us, talk about where we want to go, and begin discussing how we can help move the needle together.

Let's call a timeout. Come together. Get a strategy.

We’ll pause, gather, and begin a conversation about how we can work together to move the needle in St. Joseph.

Call a timeout. Come together. Get a strategy.

Over the last 10 months, I’ve had the unusual pleasure of spending a lot of time talking with people all over St. Joseph.

Join us at Cup of Joe this week!

Join us at Cup of Joe this week!

Meet this week’s presenter: Wes Simmons is the president and CEO of the 3D Institute, which he helped launch in 2014 to equip coaches and leaders to develop people in all three dimensions: skills, mind, and heart. Drawing from his own experience playing on championship football teams led by transformational coaches, Wes has dedicated his career to helping leaders build high-performing teams on a foundation of purpose.

Under his leadership, the 3D Coaching framework has expanded from its roots in athletics into education, business, and other sectors, reaching leaders through training and workshops in more than 60 countries.

In 2021, Wes began pioneering an ambitious experiment in his hometown of St. Joseph: Could the same coaching framework used to transform teams and organizations help shape the culture of an entire community? That question gave birth to The Joseph Company—a growing network of local leaders working together to help St. Joseph clarify its identity, establish its purpose, and intentionally architect a healthy, life-giving culture.

Wes and his wife, Amy, live in St. Joseph with their four children: Andrea, Jason, Coy, and Caleb.

A coach can tell you about the culture they are trying to create.

But if you want to understand how that culture is actually being experienced, talk to the players.

Over the past five years, 500 leaders across St. Joseph have helped define the culture we aspire to create. The Community Culture Survey was our opportunity to “talk to the players” and hear directly from the residents who experience our community every day.

Now you can explore what they told us.

Explore the Community Culture Survey Dashboard and use the filters to see how perspectives differ across age groups, parts of town and other demographics.

TIMEOUT!

Sometimes the most important thing a coach can do is call a timeout.

After five years of listening to our community, our recent Community Culture Survey revealed something we can’t ignore:

78% of respondents don’t believe St. Joseph is moving in the right direction for future generations.

That’s a reason to call timeout.

Not to complain about where we are... but to stop, come together as one team, assess what’s happening, and decide what we’re going to do about it.

Coaches’ Timeout is a community conversation for leadership teams and individual leaders from across St. Joseph.

Let’s call timeout. Come together. And get a strategy.

It’s time to move the needle on the Hope Meter in St. Joseph.
