Did you know that the humble sweet potato can become chips, flour, and even nutritious porridge—all while boosting farmer incomes in western Kenya?

Inspired by George Washington Carver value-added agriculture, Mwandani International works with smallholder farmers in Bunyore in western Kenya to transform their harvests into real economic opportunities.

2 million Kenyans are homeless. Half are children.

Most people think of homelessness as an urban problem. At Mwandani International, we see it differently — it often begins the moment someone leaves a rural community because there is no opportunity to stay.

Our latest article explores what it really takes to create that opportunity through community-led agricultural value addition in rural western Kenya — and why the most sustainable change happens when communities lead it themselves.

🌾 Why Rural Communities Still Matter 🌾

Did you know that over 2 million Kenyans experience homelessness, with half being children? Many migrated from rural areas seeking opportunity, only to end up in urban informal settlements.

But what if opportunity existed where people already are?

At Mwandani International, we believe rural economic empowerment through agricultural value addition is the key to keeping families together and communities thriving.

When farmers in western Kenya can transform their raw crops into processed, packaged products, they:

✅ Earn sustainable incomes at home

✅ Create local employment opportunities

✅ Keep families intact and communities strong

✅ Prevent the displacement that leads to urban homelessness

Read our latest article to learn why investing in rural communities isn't just good development—it's essential to breaking cycles of poverty and migration.

Returning home to Nakuru this past December felt different.

The city I grew up in has changed—busier, louder, more crowded—yet beneath the congestion and growth are familiar challenges that remain, especially for vulnerable children and families pushed to the margins.

This reflection connects my mother’s legacy, the realities of rural poverty, and why Mwandani International focuses on value-added agriculture in Kenya as a long-term pathway to dignity, opportunity, and hope.

If this story resonates with you, I invite you to read, reflect, and learn more about the work we are doing together.

“Seeds of Hope”

🌱 Every seed we plant carries a story of hope.

The Mwandani International renewal is about more than restarting our projects — it’s about reigniting dreams for families across rural Kenya.

By teaching climate-smart farming and value addition, we’re helping farmers grow both food and opportunity — right where they are. 🌾

To our supporters (past, present, and future), we would like you to know that thanks to your support, thoughts, and prayers we survived the pandemic and we have emerged strong and ready to help those in need in rural Kenya prepare themselves to battle the future.

There is much to do and an increasing number of people who need help. Poverty is the underlying reason for most of those in need, whereas unavoidable situations brought about by climate change continue to make things worse for the most vulnerable.

We trust that we can count on your support because without you we cannot accomplish much. Please visit our website (https://mwandani.org) or follow us here or on Twitter (https://twitter.com/MwandaniIntl) for more information.

Mwandani International is conducting a shoe fundraiser that runs until December 31, 2020.

Mwandani International will earn funds based on the total weight of the shoes collected as Funds2Orgs, a Florida-based social enterprise, will purchase all the donated footwear. The dollars Mwandani International earns from the shoe drive will benefit rural Kenyan farmers and help them develop small-scale agriculture-based industries that produce value-added products thereby increasing earning potential and creating job opportunities. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes. Tie the shoes together or put them in a plastic bag and then in clearly marked boxes at the following locations:

• In St. Joseph: 2516 Meadow Ridge Drive, St. Joseph, MO 64504

• In Maryville: First Baptist Church, 121 East Jenkins Street, Maryville, MO 64468, and 707 Windsor Avenue, Maryville, MO 64468

Alternatively, you can call (660) 541-1500 to arrange for shoes to be picked up.

All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain, and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe, and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send her son to law school.

Shoe drop-off bin at 2516 Meadow Ridge Drive, St. Joseph, MO 64504.

Please help us collect as many shoes as we possibly can.
