CGR Journey
Recent community health assessments show a significant gap in the overall health of black people versus white people in Berrien County, Michigan. These studies found major disparities in death rates between the two groups at all stages of life, including infant and child mortality rates. So, we must ask: ”Why is this happening and how can we fix it?”
One reason why is structural racism – meaning that public and private institutions – schools, hospitals, employers, housing, and the courts – have hard-wired, built-in biases that have eroded the well-being of communities of color for generations, causing poor health and early death.
This led us to launch Community Grand Rounds, or CGR, an education and awareness building initiative. Through CGR we speak to medical and business professionals along with community members about the deep and profound impact of racism on health.
CGR uses a variety of formats to engage and inform people including presentations by thought leaders, community book reads and film screenings. We also facilitate community conversations through what we call “Brave Talks.” The goal of these events is to promote social change by working together to heal the trauma of racism.
