“Cannabis definitely can affect the heart. There is a lot of clinical evidence to support that it causes heart attacks, strokes, arrhythmias, and can also be implicated in heart failure as well, too.” —Dr. Mark Chandy

The St. James Caring Center Resource Center will be offering classes and creating sellable items from things that would previously be tossed in the dumpster.

We needed a laptop computer loaded with the Microsoft package for our large screen TVs to teach educational classes. We were swapping computers from our offices to use during presentations which restricts our efficiency in other dimensions. A new setup in the Resource Center will coordinate training with the High School and work as an outreach program within our community.

The warehouse attached to the Resource Center used to store in-need-of-repair items needed to replace 1 pallet jack that is broken, and one will be necessary for the new Resource Center.

Who can through with funding? Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District! With a grant of $1,840 the items were purchased.

Pictured is the St. James Caring Center Thrift Store Assistant Manager Denise who is researching and tracking ideas for upcycling donated items. Cannot wait for the public to see the creations and innovative ideas we have for refashioning.

George volunteers nearly every day to assist with whatever needs to be done. He is all smiles with 2 new pallet jacks. George oversees baled recycled clothing operation. Bales weigh between 400 – 600 pounds. Unquestionably working pallet jacks will make his job easier!

Last of the concrete poured to create additional parking spaces after the storage sheds were removed. The newly constructed Resource Center/Warehouse now accommodates our vital storage. To clarify, all donations of sellable items are processed within 24 hours to be placed on the sales floor. What is stored in the warehouse are seasonal items such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day items as well as seasonal clothing and so on. Last count we had over 500 boxes of Christmas/Holiday items to be sold in the Mini Shopping Mall of St. James aka St. James Caring Center Thrift Store located at 113 W. Eldon. Store hours extended to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Store opens at 9:00 Monday – Friday. Stop by soon… Stop by often… Donate your clean sellable items

Backpack food programs offer families free groceries for weekends and school breaks. Food backpacks include healthy, easy-to-prepare food for kid-friendly meals. Food assistance—which helps relieve both emotional and economic stress for the family—means children can learn more and worry less. A grant award to the St. James Caring Center by Phelps County Child Advocacy Network will assist the St. James Schools by providing backpacks, school supplies and food. Backpacks and school supplies were delivered by Faye and her Grandson Trenton to the Elementary School… next load will be food delivery. The corporation between the schools and the Caring Center is nothing less than amazing.

Wagons Ho! That is Brenda and Faye from the St. James Caring Center with a wagon load of goodies for the St. James School Backpack Program. Thinking these ladies need a team of horses to pull that wagon! Luckily, we have a van to transport this wagon load and many more to the school. Thank you Faye and Brenda for roping in our donations and to make certain they are delivered before school starts.

The St. James Caring Center always needs compassionate, dedicated volunteers to carry out our mission on Commodity Day. This a year-around program serving 250+- families per month that has a true impact on our community. To some of us this is a calling… a mission… a passion. Is it yours? If so, please contact Marilyn at the Caring Center to sign up! 265-2047 This month volunteers from as far away as Cape Girardeau witnessed the magnitude of our operation. Until you experience Commodity Day hands-on, you just cannot imagine the rewarding sentiment of helping so many people. Commodity Day is scheduled for the 3rd Thursday of each month from 7:30 to 9:30.

“We have been in emergency response mode for two years now,” says Director Nancy Montgomery. “We are currently figuring out what can we continue to offer the families that we are serving, how much food can we continue to provide for them, and how are we able to sustain that as an organization?”

The St. James Caring Center Commodity Day pantry receives food donations from various partner organizations, but lately, it has been quite the challenge to maintain a full warehouse.

“When supplies are not available to the food bank, then they are not available from the food bank to us,” Montgomery described. “That is something we are attributing to food costs and shortages. Several shelves in the pantry have become a more barren than usual.”

As shown in the picture, the grocery carts that in past were filled to overflowing are now about three-quarters full.

If you would like to help, please consider dropping off canned vegetables, canned fruit, cereal, or other non-perishable food items. Want us to shop for you? Great! Your monetary donation will be spent in St. James with businesses that support our benevolent work. Mailing address: St. James Caring Center 113 W. Eldon St. James Missouri 65559
