Building on over 20 years of support for science-based management, SCI and its litigation partners continue to defend the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decisions in federal court.

SCI, Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation, and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation filed their final brief in three consolidated cases challenging the Service’s denial of petitions seeking to restore Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections for wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountains states of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and portions of Oregon, Washington, and Utah. Wolf populations in these states have grown rapidly, with Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming now reporting more than 2,600 wolves.

“The ESA was never intended to be a permanent federal management program for recovered species. Wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountains are recovered and thrive under state management. Attempts to relist these wolves under the ESA are not about science or conservation. SCI will continue fighting to ensure that recovered wolf populations remain under the stewardship of the states that have successfully conserved them for the last fifteen years,” said SCI CEO W. Laird Hamberlin.

If the challenges prevail, management authority over wolves in these States would return to the federal government, ending state-regulated hunting programs. But state management programs are critical to balancing wolf populations with impacts on elk, deer, moose, and local communities. 🦌

As usual they failed to mention the Safari Club International (SCI) was the main source of funding for the project. SCI donated over $800,000.00 to the project, it most likely would not have happened without their support.

The Great Lakes have a $1.15 billion line of defense against invasive carp, but construction on it has been stopped again just as juvenile silver carp are showing up farther upstream than ever before.

The Brandon Road Interbasin Project in Joliet, Illinois, about 40 miles southwest of Lake Michigan, is designed to use electric, acoustic and bubble deterrents to keep bighead and silver carp from reaching the Great Lakes. Michigan, Illinois and the federal government are partners on the project.

The concern is not theoretical. Bighead and silver carp can grow rapidly, eat enormous amounts of food and reproduce by the millions. Scientists fear they could out-compete native fish and disrupt the Great Lakes fishery, which is valued at more than $5.1 billion.

In August, crews found several hundred juvenile silver carp, only 4 to 6 inches long, in the Marseilles Pool of the Illinois River. It was the first time fish that small had been found that far upstream since monitoring began in 2010.

The Trump administration halted work in late July for what the Army Corps of Engineers described as an “administrative review,” without further explanation. President Trump had previously directed his administration to move quickly on barriers to keep invasive carp out of the Great Lakes.

Michigan officials say they remain committed to finishing the project. A bipartisan group of Great Lakes lawmakers, including Michigan Reps. Debbie Dingell and Bill Huizenga, has also urged the administration to restart construction.

For Michiganders, this is bigger than one fish or one construction project. The Great Lakes shape our drinking water, our fishing, our economy and a huge part of what makes this state home.
