On the evening of June 2, 2025, Hometown Heroes of Columbia County had the pleasure of awarding our first ever scholarship to a graduating Columbia County high school student who is the dependent of a veteran. The scholarship was established in 2024 and is part of our efforts to recognize and support the families of our military service members and veterans.
Applications received this year were from some of the most hardworking individuals academically, as well as in extracurricular activities. One student stood out for his essay sharing his insight on growing up in a military family and how he would like to support service members and veterans that protect our freedoms.
It was our honor to recognize and award our $500 the Hometown Heroes of Columbia County Scholarship to Jaxson Burgard. Throughout his high school years, he has been a member of Student Council, a Lion Crew Leader, and Captain of both Varsity Cross Country and Varsity Track & Field. He is a varsity athlete, manages the Girls Wrestling Team part-time, has been an athlete of the month, an AVID Program participant, a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the Key Club. Outside of school he has been an outdoor school counselor, the American Legion Boys State Representative and an Elks Teen of the Month.
He has some wonderful ideas on how to support veterans, particularly those who may be struggling. We hope that as he studies Kinesiology and works toward a Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Pacific University that he will have the opportunity to implement some of those ideas in support of veterans.
Please join us in congratulating Jaxson and wish him well as he pursues his academic goals!
