Vilas County is actively monitoring the developing weather situation and coordinating preparation activities with local partners. Residents are strongly encouraged to prepare now to avoid having to travel once conditions deteriorate and to help keep roads clear for emergency responders and public works functions.

Potential travel impacts—including downed trees, power lines, reduced visibility, and snow‑covered roads—may significantly hinder travel and delay emergency response times. Completing preparedness actions in advance is essential.

Residents are urged to:

• Prepare for power outages.
• Use generators/ space heaters in a safe manner to avoid carbon dioxide and fires.
• Assemble emergency supplies, including food, fuel, a safe warming source, flashlights, fully charged cell phones, and essential medications.
• Ensure vehicles have adequate fuel and are equipped with an emergency kit.
• Shovel snow in short intervals to avoid overexertion.
• Bring pets out of the elements and ensure their needs, like fresh unfrozen water, are included in preparedness plans.
• Maintain multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings and continue monitoring local media/weather radios for updates.
• Avoid unnecessary travel and use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary.
• Road conditions can be obtained by calling 511.

Please be advised the Town Chairman John Vojta has issued this declaration.

Important Request & Reminder for our residents from SGFD

As you’ve been cleaning up from this snowfall and for the rest of the season, please remember to remove the snow from on / around the fire number at your home so it is visible. This ensures that our rescue & fire personnel can easily identify your address if you need our assistance. Thank you.

This month, SGFD had two training nights that focused on snowmobile rescue, in preparation for the opening of the snowmobile season.

Our volunteers checked that our rescue equipment was prepared, reviewed the use of our equipment & our SGFD protocols, and completed snowmobile rescue scenario drills.

SGFD wants to remind everyone to make informed decisions as the snowmobile season opens, and to check with Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club for trail conditions.

Incident Response

On Dec. 4, SGFD responded to a call made at 4:32 a.m. for mutual aid, by the Eagle River Fire Department, for a structure fire in Cloverland.

SGFD dispatched a full crew in our ladder truck, that consisted of our ladder truck & five SGFD firefighters.

Crews from Plum Lake Fire / Ambulance, Conover Fire Department, and Three Lakes Fire / Rescue also responded to the mutual aid call by Eagle River Fire Department.

Pictures taken on scene show the home fully engulfed in flames, and two of our SGFD firefighters working to assist to put the fire out. Temperatures during this call were well below freezing, and our crew did our best to assist our mutual aid partners to extinguish the fire engulfing the home.
