About S. Gifford Nielsen
S. Gifford Nielsen played professional football for the Houston Oilers in the National Football League for six seasons. After retiring, he was the sports director for KHOU-TV in Houston, Texas from 1984 until March 31, 2009. He was called as a general authority of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in April 2013.

Football career High School
Nielsen grew up in Provo, Utah, and attended Provo High School, playing both football and basketball. The Bulldogs took second in the State in football and won the State Championship in basketball his senior season.

College career
Nielsen remained in Provo and attended Brigham Young University, where he was an All-American quarterback for the Cougars under head coach LaVell Edwards. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994.

NFL career
Nielsen was selected in the third round of the 1978 NFL draft (73rd overall) by the Houston Oilers, the team with which he spent his entire NFL career, six seasons as quarterback. Nielsen served as backup to Dan Pastorini in 1978 and 1979 and to Ken Stabler in 1980 and 1981. He played the most games in his last two seasons, 1982–1983, when he shared quarterbacking duties with Archie Manning and Oliver Luck. From 1984 to 1987, he served as a color commentator on Oilers radio broadcasts.

TV sports anchor
Nielsen was the sports director at CBS affiliate KHOU in Houston from 1984 to 2009.

Church Service
Elder S. Gifford Nielsen was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 6, 2013. He was granted Emeritus status effective August 1, 2024. At the time of his call, he had been serving as a member of the Sixth Quorum of the Seventy in the North America Southwest Area. Elder Nielsen has served as an Assistant Executive Director in the Missionary Department and in the Pacific, North America Northeast, North America Central and Africa West Area Presidencies.

Personal Life
S. Gifford Nielsen was born in Provo, Utah, on October 25, 1954. He married Wendy Olson in April 1975. They are the parents of six children and 25 grandchildren.

Please join us for our next BYU Management Society/BYU J. Reuben Clark Law Society luncheon on Thursday, October 24th at noon at the Marriott Courtyard. Our speaker will be Dr. Joseph B. Platt, he will present "A Christian Family's Arabian Odyssey: Twenty Years in the Arabian Gulf"

About Our Speaker
Joe, his wife, Paula, and their four children lived in Arabia while he served as the wildlife advisor to the king of Bahrain for seven years and the environmental advisor for 14 years to the Ruler of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. As personal advisor to the rulers of Bahrain and Dubai, Platt was seconded to the rulers of other Arab countries.

Brother Platt is an environmental biologist working with the protection of endangered species. He teaches in the Biological Sciences Department at Utah Tech University and is the Director of Environmental Affairs for Black Desert Resort. He earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife from Utah State University, a master’s in zoology from Brigham Young University and a doctorate in ecology from Cornell University. Brother Platt served an LDS mission in New Zealand. His doctoral research involved camping on the North Slope of Canada’s Yukon Territory for two breeding seasons.

Please join us for our next BYU Management Society/BYU J. Reuben Clark Law Society luncheon to be held Monday, March 25th, at noon, at the Marriott Courtyard

About Our Speaker:

Clark Christian was born in St. George, Utah. He served a 2 ½ year mission to Germany from 1962 to 1965 and married Laurel Webb in 1965. He and his wife are the parents of 6 children, 30 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Following Clark's mission, he attended BYU and received his bachelor's degree in history. In 1965 he began teaching Seminary in the CES program. The last 11 years were in Boston, MA, where Clark served as the Institute Director. All total he taught Seminary and Institute of Religion for 40 years. He retired from the CES program in 2005. He and his wife served two missions to Germany from 2006-2011.

In 1972 Clark received his Master's degree from BYU in history and German. In 1974 he received his PhD degree from BYU in American History, western US History, and LDS Church history. Clark taught at the BYU Jerusalem Center in 1991, 1994, 1997, and 1999. He taught at the Joseph Smith Academy in Nauvoo for BYU in 2005 and 2006. Beginning in 1994, and over the next 30 years he and his wife have directed tours to Egypt, Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Greece, and Rome.

About Our Speaker:
Scott A. Gubler, President, CEO and Founder of Deseret Laboratories Incorporated. Received Associate of Science Degree from Dixie College. Graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration. Received a Juris Doctorate from J. Rueben Clark Law School in 1980. One of the Founding Directors for BYU Management group here in St. George. Past President and board member for the Zion’s National Parks, advisory council (Zion Forever Project). Served on Dixie State University National Advisory Council, and is a member of the President’s Volunteer Leadership Council for the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Brigham Young University. Principal organizer along with Mark Gubler, of Archeological Research campaigns in Oman and Assistant Director, Archeological Research Institute Logistics, Research Development, Supervision, and training of dig site teams during campaigns at Khor Kharfot, Oman

Both Scott and Mark Gubler are working directly with UT Tech University to establish an archaeology program.

BYU Management Society and the BYU J. Reuben Clark Law Society are excited to invite you to their January 18th, Luncheon featuring Mary Pearson. The luncheon will be held at the St. George Marriott Courtyard at 12:00 noon. Mary Pearson is the CFO, Vice President of Finance and Administration at Southern Utah University overseeing all Human Resource, Accounting & Budget, Audit, IT, Purchasing, and Business & Entrepreneurial Operations. Prior to her current role, Mary was the Dean of the Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business responsible for all undergraduate and graduate business programs at SUU. While serving as Dean she more than doubled enrollment, revamping the MBA program making it the largest MBA program in the state of Utah with over 875 students Fall 2023. Additionally, she raised over $15 million dollars in philanthropy and shepherded the construction of two new business buildings. Mary is an Associate Professor of Accounting and has taught internationally at two business schools in Austria for the last 17 years.

Mary is a certified public accountant with her own financial firm where she services over 250 clients. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for State Bank of Southern Utah, is on the Dixie & Anne Leavitt Family Foundation Board, the Helen Foster Snow Advisory Board, and is an appointed member of the Governor’s Economic Council representing the southern half of the state of Utah. Mary has served on several government appointed boards including the Chair of the Cedar City Planning and Zoning Commission, the Water Acquisition Board, the General Plan Executive Board, and on the Beaver County School District Audit Committee.

Mary recently was awarded the UACPA Women to Watch Leadership Award and the Cedar City Service Award. She has a Bachelors and Masters degree in Accounting and her PhD in Business Administration with an emphasis in Advanced Accounting. In addition to Mary's professional service, she served as PTA President, President of five LDS auxiliaries, and is a licensed competitive soccer coach. She is married to Alan Pearson and has 4 married children and 5 adorable grandchildren.

We are pleased to announce a combined BYU Management Society and BYU J. Reuben Clark Law Society luncheon for October 12th with Kevin Ence as our keynote speaker. Kevin is the new temple president of the Red Cliffs Utah Temple The luncheon is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m. at the Courtyard Marriott, located at 185 South 1470 East in St. George. We're excited to see you there.

Brief bio of President Ence:
John Kevin Ence has been called as the president of the new Red Cliffs Utah Temple. President Ence is a ward mission leader and a former Area Seventy, Australia Brisbane Mission president, stake president, high councilor, and bishop. A retired self-employed contractor and developer.
