Rosedown’s gardens are some of the largest and most intact of all the early 19th century gardens still in existence today. Martha Turnbull, mistress of Rosedown, documented daily life and her gardens in great detail. Today daily operations and plantings in the gardens are planned by park manager Trish Aleshire who makes a point to stay true to its roots.

We are delighted to share Rosedown with you on Friday and Saturday during the Southern Garden Symposium.

On Friday morning Tammany Baumgarten leads an informative workshop on native plants of Louisiana and their benefits, including those that may help qualify Rosedown as a certified Louisiana Native Habitat!

The Saturday Symposium offers a plant sale, book sale, and a silent auction as well as a wonderful program of 4 speakers, all taking place at Rosedown.

The floral design demonstration at Afton Villa Gardens is a favorite workshop of the Southern Garden Symposium! Set under magnificent oaks, near beautifully planted ruins gardens, guests will enjoy the arrangements of Mary Cox Brown of Marigold Designs!

Mary Cox will lead the audience in designing beautiful arrangements, of all shapes and sizes, explaining techniques and tricks to help hold each stem in place.

New this year, after the arrangements are made a painting group from The Art House in St. Francisville will use them as their inspiration for paintings and they will be on display on Saturday!

From the journal of John James Audubon- c. 1821 upon his arrival at Oakley

“The rich magnolias covered with fragrant blossoms, the holly, the beech, the tall yellow poplar, the hilly ground and even the red clay, all excited my admiration. Such an entire change in the fall of nature in so short a time seems almost supernatural, and surrounded once more by numberless warblers and thrushes, I enjoyed the scene.”
