Literacy Week Day 2: Words Build Confidence

The words we know can influence how we communicate, learn, advocate for ourselves, and connect with others.

Building a strong vocabulary isn't about trying to sound impressive. It's about giving yourself more tools to clearly express your thoughts, understand new information, and confidently communicate what you need.

Through our Survival Program, we want young people to recognize that strengthening their vocabulary can support them in the classroom, during interviews, in the workplace, and throughout everyday life.

And building your vocabulary can start small! Read something new, look up unfamiliar words, ask questions, play word games, or challenge yourself to learn one new word each day.

💡 Today's Word Challenge: PERSIST

Persist means to continue doing something despite difficulties or delays.

📚 Welcome to Literacy Week at Steps Foundation!

We’re kicking off Day 1 with an important reminder: Literacy is everywhere.

Literacy goes far beyond being able to read a book. Young people use literacy skills when they complete schoolwork, read instructions, fill out applications, communicate through emails and messages, manage money, prepare for a job, and make everyday decisions.

That’s why literacy connects so closely to the work of our Survival Program. Developing strong reading, writing, comprehension, and communication skills can give young people tools they’ll carry with them into adulthood.

Throughout this week, we’ll be sharing a new topic each day that connects literacy to school, career readiness, independence, and everyday life.

💡 Today’s Literacy Challenge:
Take a moment to notice just how often you read or write throughout your day. You might be surprised!

That’s the power of mentorship, and it’s the heart behind our first Quarter Giving Campaign: 🎮 GAME ON FOR MENTORSHIP, Connection Changes Everything.

We’re raising $1,000 by September 30 to create a special arcade experience for our students and their mentors. It’s more than a fun day out—it’s an opportunity to laugh, talk, build trust, strengthen relationships, and create memories together.

🎯 100 people × $10 = $1,000. We’re asking our community to Make a Play for Mentorship and help create meaningful moments for our students.
