Thursday, June 18, 2026
6:00 PM – 7:15 PM ET

A view of Prague in the early 17th century. In the 17th century, the Jews of Prague had to pay a "turnover tax" on their business transactions, as part of the many fees put upon them. Luckily for genealogists, the pardon tax records from 1685-1687 and 1696 have been preserved, as well as from Prague in the year 1731. Similar registers have been preserved in other cities in the Czech lands. (See our previous post in relation to genealogical research earlier today).

The registers, now kept at the Jewish Museum in Prague, provide valuable information on Jewish trade routes and business in this time period. They show us that Prague Jews worked in a network of markets both within the city and abroad, a valuable knowledge for historians as well as genealogists.

Jews who paid the Pardon Tax are listed in alphabetical order by their names in these records. It lists those Jews engaged in trade and crafts in those years, which was shortly after a plague swept through Prague in 1680. Several columns are reserved for larger merchants, while smaller taxpayers are recorded in four columns. If you can trace your ancestry this far back to Prague or the surrounding communities of the Czech lands, it may be worth it for you to look into accessing these registers.
