Weeks 3 and 4 are in the books for the second academy of 2026, and this group is starting to get a taste of what the job is really about. They’ve been spending more time working on skills such as learning how to move with a watercan, perform VES, advance hose up stairs, use master streams, FDC operations, wild land firefighting tactics and put together the pieces of an actual fireground operation. They’ve also gotten time on the aerials, working alongside on-shift personnel and outside instructors.

The recruits even got the opportunity to get some real fire under their belts during live burns, again working alongside experienced firefighters and outside instructors. There’s nothing quite like being in the heat, in the gear, and having to rely on your training and the people around you. You can start to see the confidence building and the pieces beginning to come together. We’re proud of the work they’re putting in and excited to see them keep growing.

This week, members of our E-Board are attending the 3-day Minnesota Professional Fire Fighters - MPFF Convention hosted by Winona Firefighters Local 575.

The focus this year is classes and training through the MPFF’s Political Training Academy (PTA). The goal is simple: give our local the tools and knowledge we need to better represent our members and have a stronger voice when it comes to political action.

But it’s not all about the classroom! One of the best parts of these events is getting together with our brothers and sisters from locals all across Minnesota. We get to share ideas, talk about what’s working (and what isn’t), and build relationships with other firefighters who have the same passion as we do.

Thank you President Anderson, Vice President Eull, Secretary/Treasurer Bowland, and At-Large Rep Thompson for taking advantage of this opportunity! Proud to have Local 464 at the table and doing the work to make our local stronger.
