Instead of simply telling children they did well, tell them exactly what they did right: “Thank you for putting your toys away without being asked!” Specifics help children connect the reward of praise to the behaviors you appreciate—and it encourages them to do it again. ​

Starting kindergarten or moving to a new childcare setting is a significant shift for kids, and some will need extra support to navigate it well. Pay attention to your child if they show signs of stress during this transition, such as sleep changes, increased clinginess or intense emotional reactions. ​

Ellison Center offers free, one-on-one Caregiver Support Visits for families of children eight and under in central Minnesota – available in English, Spanish, and Somali. ​
