The Gated Community is a Minneapolis-based Americana band celebrating its twentieth anniversary year. Formed in 2006 in the city’s storied West Bank neighborhood by South Asian American singer-songwriter Sumanth Gopinath, the band is known for its gripping original songs, beautiful vocal harmonies, and multiple lead singers. Encompassing country, folk, bluegrass, and rock influences, TGC's genre-bending style draws comparisons to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Gillian Welch, and the Band, among others.
The band's sixth album, Goodbye Work (2025), was included in The Minnesota Star Tribune's midyear list of top 10 albums from the state, alongside acts like Trampled by Turtles and Alan Sparhawk. The title track "Goodbye Work" was also recently nominated by the Midwest Country Music Organization for "Song of the Year." Music critic Chris Riemenschneider describes the band as “more familial and relevant than ever,” and Adventures in Americana contributor Doyle Turner notes that the band’s music provides “an arms-wide-open offering to everyone who listens.”
They are celebrating the release of their new single "Hope to Hell," proceeds from which are going to the Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC). The song was recently featured by Americana UK.
Band members are Sumanth Gopinath (acoustic guitar), Rosie Harris (banjo), Beth Hartman (organ and auxiliary percussion), Paul Hatlelid (drums), Cody Johnson (bass), and Nate Knutson (electric guitar). Everyone in the band sings.
