Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students and families need to understand what the future of work entails, build career knowledge, and have equitable and holistic preparation. To make that happen, K-12 schools and districts, higher education systems, companies and industry, and Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities need to partner with each other—and they need increased funding for college and career preparation. If K-12 schools and districts combine these efforts under a equitable, community-centered lens, they can help reduce disparate educational and career outcomes for Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students and set them up for success in college and future careers.

Community members in Indiana and New Mexico provide context on how Black, Latinx, and Indigenous students should be fully prepared for the future workforce.

Narrowing down your career path can be extremely complicated and daunting when there are so many options. Informational interviews are an excellent strategy for gaining some clarity. An informational interview is a one-on-one conversation with a professional who is doing something or working somewhere that’s interesting to you. This is a style of networking that’s shorter and slightly less formal than a traditional job interview, but can give you extremely valuable results.

The goal of an informational interview is to learn about a person’s daily life at work. You should be gathering information about their career and the company they work for.The information you gain and the connections you make during informational interviews can very likely lead to job opportunities, but if your intention going in is solely to get a job, the conversation may seem inauthentic to the other person. Take it slow and leverage informational interviews for their true purpose; to find a career path and learn what you need to do to follow that path.

This week we piloted a neighborhood reading program in collaboration with the Yes Network and Great River Children's Museum. We read both the English and Somali editions of Hudda Ibrahim's children's book 'What Color is My Hijab?' and helped the kids explore career ideas. We anticipate more neighborhood reading activities in the future! Stay tuned!
