Our need for instant gratification comes at a cost in many ways...

Most neighborhoods took shape slowly, as people found ways to make the places they lived work for them.

A house was built on an empty lot. Later, someone finished the space over a garage, or added a small backyard cottage, or made room for a relative who needed to be close by. These were modest changes, made one at a time, as needs and opportunities came up.

That kind of growth didn’t require a massive investment. It didn’t remake the whole block overnight. It simply allowed the neighborhood to keep adapting.

Today, we’ve made that kind of change rare.

In many places, adding housing means a large project, done all at once. It can feel out of reach for ordinary people, and out of scale with the neighborhood around it.

But there’s another way.

When we allow small, incremental homes to be built over time, more people get a hand in shaping the places they live. Neighborhoods can make room for new needs without losing what people value about them.

We don’t have to choose between no change and everything changing at once.

There’s a middle path, and it’s one we’ve used before.
