HorsePower Therapeutic Riding

HorsePower Therapeutic Riding Harnessing the Healing Power of the Horse We strive to show our students the horse's power to change us, inside and out!

Physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges no longer need to stand in the way of those with special needs who dream about getting into the saddle and making a connection with a special horse. Individualized lesson programs include intake and assessment sessions, groom and tack, groundwork, and horseback riding instruction. We also provide non-disabled riders the extra support they may desire

as well as carefully trained, reliable horses and a safe, fun environment in which to learn. Therapeutic horseback riding is a dynamic recreational activity in which individuals with special needs are able to overcome challenges and learn new skills. Communication, connection, and teamwork between the student and their horse offers opportunities for physical, emotional, cognitive, sensory and social growth. Plus, the horse provides irresistible motivation which allows students to achieve more in the saddle than other traditional sports and therapies. HorsePower students are taught to ride with ever-increasing levels of independence. Trained volunteer horse leaders and side-walkers are provided initially, and slowly pulled away over time as the rider demonstrates the ability to safely guide their own horse. All students are encouraged to schedule adequate time to learn how to groom and tack their horse prior to the lesson....enriching the bond and providing additional opportunities for skill acquisition. HorsePower has a tradition where instructors take turns selecting a Volunteer of the Month. With over 100 volunteers, it is no easy task!

At the end of 2026, a Volunteer of the Year will be selected from this pool of dedicated individuals who have been awarded Volunteer of the Month.

Honoring our hard-working crew and highlighting just a few of the many incredible people who support our program is an important part of showing our appreciation.

🎉Miss Sommer’s choice for August Volunteer of the Month is Stephen Burns!🎉

From his first day, Steve has proved how dedicated he is to volunteering. He greets everyone with a smile and can be found lending a hand with ranch work and Critters on Wednesdays. He has a background in animal rescue, and his knowledge makes him an excellent source to go to if you have questions.

He loves sharing his experiences! Steve is reliable and confident. He is always willing to help instructors, volunteers, and students. He is always a friendly face at HorsePower! We are very happy that you’re part of our team!

Our team has been having lots of fun in classes this month!

🐓Our chickens and ducks have been enjoying their updated Critter area and our team of volunteers and students have been doing an amazing job at keeping it clean and tidy for their comfort, especially during these hot summer days!

🕶 Rory & Gypsy have been enjoying their lessons together in their matching sunglasses! These two are way too cool together!

🐴Kendall certainly loves Atlas! Not too many horses get to see a life size version of themselves - and he definitely approves!

Make sure you have "Liked" and "Followed" the HorsePower Facebook and Instagram to see our Lesson Snaps throughout the year!

We are incredibly proud of all of our participants and the hard work, growth, and dedication they bring to every lesson. But when a milestone is reached, it’s definitely worth celebrating!

🎉Today, we’re giving a BIG congratulations to Kari who recently reached her 100th lesson! 🎉

100 lessons represent 100 opportunities to learn, grow, build confidence, strengthen connections, and make memories with our equine partners. 🐴💙

We are so proud of you and can’t wait to see where the next 100 lessons take you!

Happy National Dog Day!

This special day celebrates our amazing canine companions and helps to spread recognition of the number of dogs that need to be rescued each year.

The Ranch is home to four resident dogs - Annie, Archie, Doug & River and at any given time you’ll see some of the (adorable) wagging tails below running around playing together on the property!

We’d love to see your favorite pup-panion in the comments below ⬇️

🎉Miss Mary Beth’s choice for July Volunteer of the Month is Barb Tillson!🎉

Barb embodies everything that makes a truly exceptional therapeutic volunteer. As a sidewalker, Barb consistently demonstrates attentiveness, compassion, and professionalism. She connects with participants who may be feeling anxious or uncertain.

She remains aware of everything happening in the arena, carefully following the instructor’s direction and safely supporting our students. Barb’s big smile, positive attitude, and great sense of humor are contagious. She brings warmth and joy to participants, families, volunteers, and staff alike.

She is always willing to step in wherever needed. Her flexibility, kindness, and dependable “can-do” attitude maker her someone we can always count on 💙💙

We'd like to extend a very grateful thank you to our friends at Dover Saddlery Batavia, IL

Cathy Roney and her team have been incredible supporters of our program through their annual giving tree and trainer rewards program since they opened their location in Batavia.

It is a heartbreaking loss for our equestrian community as the store's doors close this week, but please know what a wonderful impact your team had on our program throughout the years 💙💙

📣Important Reminder to our HP Community📣

We had a scare this week at the ranch. Our sweet, loving Chunder had to spend the last few days in the hospital being treated for bladder stones. Because of the quick thinking of HBR and their staff, he got the emergency treatment he needed and we're hopeful he'll have a full recovery.

That's where you all come in!

It's imperative that Chunder and Cody ONLY eat their specialty diet and whatever they choose to catch on their own. We are asking the entire HP Community to ensure that they do not get ANY treats as they will be strictly limited to their prescription diet. Please do not bring them treats or feed them additional food under any circumstances.

This is a great cautionary tale about food treats and our request goes for all of the animals on the ranch. Many of our animal partners have dietary restrictions. Instructors know what's acceptable for each animal at the ranch so please do not feed anything without staff supervision.

We know how tempting it can be to love them with food and we appreciate everyone's help in ensuring that our animal friends are safe!!! 💙💙
