The 3rd Saturday in August, every year, we play golf, have a few drinks, some ci**rs, make some money for a worthy cause and honor a great friend who was lost too early.

Good afternoon Leach Cuppers,

Look, I’m sending this out earlier than last year. Yippee. I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend and are ready for the official start of summer. And judging by the current weather, it’s going to be a warm one.

This year we have moved the Leach Cup up 1 week to the second Saturday in August. This is to accommodate those that have been missing due to kids going away to college or a lot of high school sports, etc. If you remember, I did put this to a vote and moving it up a week won.

We are returning to Pottawatomie Golf Course for our 3rd year in a row. For those that have not participated in the last few years, this is the course Dave used to work at and is a lot tougher than it looks on the scorecard.

Lastly, this is the 25th Leach Cup!!! Yes, that is right, we are hosting this outing for the 25th time. 25 of these outings. That is a lot of bad golf but also a lot of fun. A lot of great memories over the years. Let’s hope this one adds to the wonderful memories.

What: 25th Annual Leach Cup Golf Outing Extravaganza
When: Saturday August 8th, 2026 10:30am
Where: Pottawatomie Golf Course
Cost: You pay for 18 holes of golf. It will cost more if you want to use a golf cart or a pull cart.

Please look at your calendar, clear off the 8th, come on out, have fun, play bad golf, enjoy the weather, look for the plaques on the course and remember those that we have lost too soon in our lives.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you plan on playing this year. Provide your group information to me so we can get the tee times booked as quickly as possible.

Happy Summer.

Happy 85th Birthday to Mr. Tom Leach!! You are a legend! We all love you!

07/02/2025

Good afternoon Leach Cuppers,

I apologize for posting this so late as I am usually way better and more annoying at getting this to you guys in May or June. But whatever, here it is, July 2nd and I am finally sending out the announcement.

As most of you should know by now, and if you don't, where the hell have you been? The Leach Cup is held on the 3rd Saturday in August every year. And guess what, that did not change for this year.

What: Leach Cup Golf Outing Extravaganza
When: Saturday August 16th, 2025 10am
Where: Pottawatomie Golf Course
Cost: No idea, I have not discussed this with the course yet, but I am guessing it will be similar to last year.

This year we have 10 tee times booked. I am not sure if we can do more as I believe the course has another outing right after we are done.

What do I need from you? Well, I need to know who is playing. If you do not have a group and are looking to get paired up, please let me know. I will see what I can do.

So, start planning, practicing (if you think it will help) and building up a tolerance for debauchery.

Everyone try and stay cool, keep all your fingers this weekend for the 4th and be safe out there.

Fairways and Greens.

Devin

Here it is Leach Cuppers, the long awaited recap of Saturday's outing.

First, I want to thank everyone who was able to play this year. 9 groups is a pretty solid turnout. Let's make sure to thank Potty Golf Course and Billy O. for letting us play out there. That course is a lot harder to walk at 50 than at 14. I don't remember all those hills. The rain sucked, but it did not dampen the fun. The course held up well, especially after the massive downpour late in the round.

I also need to thank Feds and Jared for getting the Proxy prizes, Gordy for hosting the after party, Sandy, Brandy and Tina for helping with the food and anyone who made it to the party. Lastly, I need to thank Amy Moran, without her this does not happen. She created the posters, the new proxy signs, married the trophy for most alcohol consumed, the shot glasses (not related to the alcohol consumed prize), married my du***ss and made about 300 desserts for the party. Those that did not eat the desserts, you missed out. Devin's pork was fantastic, first time I have ever heard that.

Ok, got all that out of the way. On to the winners. First up are the proxy prizes.

Closest to the pin on #4 - Pat Norton with a shot to about 4 1/2 feet. I promised to not mention that he missed the putt. Oops. Luckily for him, it's a scramble and a teammate did make the putt.
Longest drive (in the fairway [sorry Hunecke]) on #9 - Clint VanLaningham.
Longest drive #15 - Jonathon Hunecke with an absolute bomb, in the fairway this time. And they only parred the hole. Apparently they were too close to the green.
Closest to the pin on #16 - toughest tee shot on the course and helluva shot from Danny Gratton. And of course they only parred it.

Enough talk about that, who won? My best answer is who cares? Just kidding, I'm just pi**ed about the way I played.

The winners were Team Feddern, without Feddern playing. The team was led by Pat Norton. They shot a 12 under par 58, with a clutch birdie on 18 to win by one stroke over Team VanLaningham. Congrats to the winners.

I would be remiss if I did not mention that the Metzger group did NOT finish in last this year. Congratulations Stacey, Chris, Allyson and Shaun.

Since the course was so good and I got great feedback, the plan is to return there next year. I will need to discuss this with Billy O. to make sure we are able to do so. Next year's cup with be on August 16th. Start making your plans accordingly.

I did not get many pictures this year, so please post yours to the page or send them over to me if you can.

Once again, I want to thank everyone for continuing to support the Leach Cup. See you next year.

Good afternoon,

This is my last call for anyone who has not responded. I have 8 teams, so we do have space for 2 more, but I need to know as soon as possible so Potty can release those tee times. Please let me know if you plan on playing and have a team.

Those that are playing, I will send out more details closer to the Cup.

Thanks again everyone.

Hello,

Just wanted to send out a quick email checking in on everyone to see who will be able to play this year. Please let me know as soon as practical if you are planning on playing.

Thank you to the teams that have reached out already. You should have received a response from me already.

Anyway, all of the information is listed below, copied from my previous email.

Thanks again and I hope we get to see you all this year at the Cup.

- Devin

Good evening Leach Cuppers,
I hope this email finds you well. As you have probably guessed, it is time to start planning for the 2024 Leach Cup.

For those that were not paying attention, or just completely forgot, this year’s Leach Cup is being played at a new venue for the Cup. It is not a new course for most of us, but it has never hosted the Cup before. That venue is Pottawatomie Golf Course. See below for my previous discussion about the course and the reasons we are playing there.

Anyway, on to the details.

What: 2024 Leach Cup (23rd Annual, holy s**t)

When: Saturday, August 17, 2024

Time: 10am.

Who: Put your best foursome together to take the Cup away from Gordy, Billy, Danny and Todd.

Cost: The costs this year will vary. Walking will be $40, Pull carts make it $44 and riding a cart will be $52. Potty has limited carts so I need to know very soon who will be needing a cart. I have never used one on that course. As has been the case for the last few years, you will be paying the course.

Donation: This year, again we are not asking for any donations, but if you feel the desire to provide one, please pay Steve Feddern.

Why: If you need me to answer why you should be playing in the Cup, then you clearly have never participated. It is a lot of fun every year. This year you should want to do it even more as it is at the course that Dave used to work at and you can search the course for the items that have been donated by the Leach Cup over the years.

Afterparty: Yes, there will be a party afterwards. Please ask me for the details.

Ok, now that all the basic stuff is out of the way, I have one other quick announcement:

Steve Feddern needs a Team!! He promises to be able to play this year. Murph, you need a 4th? Hunecke? Bueller? Bus, come back and make it a 1991 State Champ reunion.

Please let me know as soon as practical if you plan on playing this year. We are hoping for double digit teams again.

Fairways and Greens,

Devin

My earlier email:

Good afternoon Leach Cuppers,

I know, you just heard from me, but if you actually read my last email, I said there would be more information to follow soon. And guess what, there is.

First, a little backstory:

A long time ago, in the beautiful, picturesque town of St. Charles, a famous golf course designer was hired to design a golf course on the banks of the clean(?) Fox River. This designer felt that he could place a nine hole par 35 course in the small plot of land he was given to work with. That designer was Robert Trent Jones, Sr. The course was called Pottawatomie Golf Course. It opened in 1939.

Ok, fast forward a few decades to the late 70's through the early 90's and a group of young bucks made this course their home course. Some of those players went on to win a state championship. I will let you figure out who those players are.

Anyway, in the early 1990's, the course decided to hire and fine young gentleman named David Leach. That was the ultimate in cool. At that time, Jim Wheeler was the pro and Jim Larsen was the assistant pro. What floors me to write is that not only is David no longer with us, neither are Wheels or Larson. Trying not to be sappy here, but oh well.

Cue 2002, several members of that group of young bucks had this idea to start a golf outing to honor young Mr. Leach. This outing initially was planned to work as a charity group to raise funds for donation. The first several years the Leach Cup (as it was christened) donated several thousand dollars directly to Pottawatomie for improvements. I cannot remember how all of the funds were used, but I will say there is a beautiful plaque that was placed near a water fountain the funds helped to build. That plaque is attached for all to see.

During the 2023 Leach Cup, there was discussion that we need to bring a new course into the rotation. After some discussion, negotiation, wrestling, shots, possibly some illegal things, we have decided that the 2024 Leach Cup will be played at...........

Pottawatomie Golf Course.

The official date is August 17, 2024. The current tentative start time is 10am.

Please start planning accordingly. We want to make this one special. It is a return home for many of us.

For those that have not played the course in 10 years or more, I highly recommend it. The improvements are impressive.

Again, we will get more information out as we get closer, since it is still 11 months away, but this gives everyone a chance to plan ahead.

I hope to see many of you not only next year at the Cup, but sometime before that.
