The Tonya Kuc Foundation family is heartbroken as we lift up one of our own.

Our dear board member, Kate Batzel, and her family have experienced an unimaginable tragedy. In a very short time, they have endured a devastating house fire, the loss of their beloved dog, and most heartbreakingly, the sudden loss of her husband, Brian. Kate is now navigating this profound grief while caring for her two boys, Ben and Reid.

Kate is not only a dedicated board member—she is a light in our foundation and in our community. She has poured her heart into helping others, always showing up with compassion, strength, and generosity. Now, she and her family need that same love and support in return.

We are asking our community to come together for Kate, Ben, and Reid during this incredibly difficult time. If you are able, please consider donating to support them as they face the challenges ahead. If not, sharing this post can make a meaningful difference.

Let’s surround Kate and her boys with the love, strength, and support that she has so selflessly given to so many.

Is your teen naturally quiet, or is their silence a sign of something deeper?

For many parents, it can be hard to distinguish between healthy introversion and the early warning signs of depression or anxiety.

Introversion is a healthy personality trait—it means your teen recharges their “battery” through solitude. But when does quietness cross the line into a mental health concern?

The Key Differences:
✨ Energy: An introvert feels refreshed after alone time. Someone struggling with depression often feels persistently low, no matter how much they rest.
✨ Engagement: Introverts have a few close, meaningful friendships and keep up with their hobbies. A teen in crisis may pull away from everyone and lose interest in things they once loved.
✨ Functioning: Healthy introverts stick to their routines (school, hygiene, family dinner). A mental health concern often disrupts these daily basics.

The biggest clue? Duration. If you’ve noticed a significant change that lasts more than two weeks, it’s time to start a gentle conversation.

You don’t need to “fix” their introversion, you just need to be a safe space for their struggle.

Save this guide to help you stay mindful of the subtle shifts in your teen’s behavior.

Sometimes a mental health break is exactly what you need, but it can be hard to get there on your own. Ask for help and lean on people when you need them.

Reaching out for support can feel intimidating, but the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline is designed to be a free, confidential, and judgment-free resource available 24/7. Whether you call, text, or chat, you’ll first be greeted by an automated message or a brief survey to help route you to the right support, including specialized lines for Veterans or Spanish speakers. Once connected, a trained, compassionate counselor will introduce themselves, listen to your story, and check on your immediate safety. Their goal is to provide a calm space to de-escalate your distress and connect you with helpful local resources, ensuring you don’t have to navigate your crisis alone.

Ever feel like your “gut” is screaming at you, only to realize later it was just your anxiety running a marathon? The difference is subtle but vital: intuition is a calm, steady nudge that stays the same over time, while anxiety is a loud, frantic loop of “what ifs” rooted in fear. If your “inner voice” sounds like a fire alarm and comes with a racing heart and tight chest, the call is coming from inside the house. Trust the quiet clarity, not the urgent chaos.
