Only 30 lighthouses remain today. A 2002 study done by the State of

Florida estimates that it will take almost $20 million dollars to preserve these towers. The Florida Lighthouse Association’s (FLA) mission is to safeguard Florida’s remaining lighthouses for future generations by supporting community based restoration, preservation and education efforts. FLA is a nonprofit organization. Financial support comes from charitable gifts, membership dues, and Florida State specialty license plate sales. FLA does not receive any government funding!

One day, this could only be a memory post.

We don't want to post this lighthouse one day with the words: “We’re grateful we got to have it.”

We would rather fight for the chance to say: "It's still here.”

The Visit Our Lights plate helps keep that second sentence true. Get yours at the link in our comments.

If you said Egmont Key Lighthouse was the last remaining staffed lighthouse in Florida, you're right! 👏

Before a DCB-24 rotating beacon was installed in 1989, Egmont Key Lighthouse was the final manned lighthouse in Florida and one of only seven nationwide. Today, Florida State Parks and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service work together to manage the island!

She’s a beauty on the horizon, but up close, Alligator Reef Lighthouse reminds us why preservation work matters.

Here WJR Engineering is performing a metallurgy study on her rusting iron framework, an important step in understanding what this historic offshore light needs next. Every beam, bolt, and brace tells part of the story, and thanks to careful hands and dedicated advocates, that story is still being protected. 🧡

In 2018, the Florida Lighthouse Association awarded a $50,000 grant to the Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society to help with necessary repairs to the Hillsboro Lighthouse. The project focused on replacing 48 degraded and failed tension rod assemblies in the upper area of the tower, the “X” pattern rods with turnbuckles that help provide stability under high winds.

The new rods were fabricated to match the lighthouse’s original 1904 design, then hot-dip galvanized and coated with epoxy paint specially formulated for the harsh marine environment.

Just months later, Hurricane Irma carved away part of the light station grounds and exposed several lighthouse foundation legs, but the tower stood without structural damage. The upper-level tension rods had been replaced just in time.

That’s why the Visit Our Lights specialty plate matters. It helps support preservation work across Florida, from the big, visible projects to the hidden structural pieces that keep our historic towers standing strong!

FLA is honored to award a $75,000 grant to the Mayport Lighthouse Association in support of the next phase of the St. Johns River Lighthouse relocation effort!

This 167-year-old lighthouse has stood watch over generations of maritime history, and the work ahead is both exciting and deeply meaningful: moving, restoring, and one day returning public access to this important piece of Florida’s lighthouse heritage.

We’re grateful for the dedication and steady teamwork of everyone involved in this project, from the preservation advocates to the architects, engineers, relocation specialists, and community members who continue to believe in its future!
