Some of you are aware of the devastation to different parts of Nicaragua caused last month by concurrent hurricanes Eta and Iota. Some of you have already joined us in our efforts to provide relief and general aid to the thousands of families within reach who had their land and their lives washed away by storm surge and rising floodwaters.

Some of you are learning about these hurricanes for the first time in reading this post

Whatever the case, your support is needed now.

We mobilized immediate aid in the days and weeks following the storm, donating to other local organizations that contributed hundreds of hours in manpower, food, and equipment. They delivered mattresses and fresh water - sometimes carrying them individually across rushing waters.

The vast majority of the homes in the hardest hit areas have dirt floors. Even so many weeks later, those floors are still damp at best. In many cases, families are living and sleeping in the mud while facing other unsanitary conditions and struggling to avoid disease.

In keeping with our commitment to disaster relief in Latin America and those people who are most at need, we are working with local organizations in Nicaragua on an ambitious project to install concrete floors in 500 family homes between now and December 2021. For an average dwelling, a concrete floor costs approximately $750 USD. Whatever amount you choose to give, every dollar of your tax-deductible donation will be put toward the completion of this project. By donating now, a contribution of any size will help these communities in need of immediate assistance.

Natural disaster in the form of flooding has swept through the Nicaraguan rural communities that we serve. The rivers have swelled carrying massive amounts of mud into the homes. Crops are destroyed and food stores ruined.

Missions of Grace is raising funds to help with disaster relief for our communities after the devastating rains. All money raised will go directly to the local community. We are first concentrating on the elderly, pregnant women, and families with small children. Any amount is greatly appreciated.

We are all in this together.

"Poor farming practices, unregulated industrialization and urban poverty have massively and negatively affected Latin America’s water resources. Booming, concentrated populations in Latin America’s mega-cities are devouring and contaminating their water supplies, forcing officials to seek out increasingly distant sources."

"One out of every five Latin Americans or around 130 million people have never known anything but poverty, subsisting on less than US$4-a-day throughout their lives. These are the region´s chronically poor, who have remained so despite unprecedented inroads against poverty in Latin America since the turn of the century."

"In 2010, Latin America set a new record: for the first time ever the region had more middle class people than poor. Historically deemed unequal and saddled with deeply-rooted pockets of poverty, a booming economy and shrinking income gap over the past decade pushed over 70 million people out of poverty — twice the population of Canada."

"Some 111 million Latin Americans live in shanty towns. About 50 million new homes are needed. Despite efforts in the past 10 years to redistribute riches, 122 million city residents still live in poverty. The informal economy, with the associated lack of welfare coverage, hits young people and women particularly hard."
