The district says it cannot issue our pay increases until after VAM scores are released in October. Even though the Pay for Performance part of our increases would be, at best, $100.

We don’t think we are asking too much: pay us the increases as soon as possible, minus the Pay for Performance funds. Then issue the $75 or $100 Pay for Performance amount earned to the teachers on October 15.

Write to the decision makers and ask them to release our pay increases. Email addresses in the comments.

There are very real consequences to the decision to wait to pay the millage and retro millage funds until the next pay date. No full-time professional employee should have to make a decision like this.

Something has to give: our workload has exploded exponentially but the district isn’t listening. Holding our pay increases while demanding more work is no way to encourage loyalty and engagement.

The district needs to release the millage and pay increases as soon as it’s ready; instead, we have been told it can only be paid on the prescribed twice-a-month pay dates AND that our increases are being held until after the VAM scores are released in October. Pay for Performance is only a max of $100 with a difference of $25 between Highly Effective and Effective/Grandfathered - pay us our increases and then pay the PFP amount after the VAM scores drop. Holding money - earned income - from employees because of an outdated software program and a box to be checked sends the message that the needs of the instructional employees are not important. There has to be a way to issue owed money sooner than a scheduled pay date. Our teachers need their income as soon as possible. We can’t pay our rent or mortgage with a promise - we are calling on the district to fix the system.

These class sizes are against research and experience. We are told to build relationships in a crowded room without adequate resources.

On August 24, 1967, more than half of the public-school teachers in Florida packed Orlando’s Tangerine Bowl, filling the stands and overflowing onto the field. The rally of perhaps as many as 30,000 members of the Florida Education Association (FEA) was in response to Governor Claude Kirk's budget vetoes and what the teachers saw as a lack of adequate school funding. The result of the rally – a threat of large-scale teacher resignations – laid the groundwork for a February 1968 statewide teachers strike – the first in the country. The strike ended on March 8 after the FEA and the State Board of Education reached an agreement and the teachers returned to work.
