The Florida Microplastic Awareness Project (FMAP) is a citizen science project to raise awareness about the sources of and threats posed by microplastics in the coastal environment. Volunteers are collecting and analyzing water samples from around the state, documenting the presence of microplastics. They are also helping to educate the public about the issue and ways that people can reduce their

personal contribution of plastics to the environment. This project is funded by a 2015 NOAA Marine Debris Outreach and Education Grant to UF/IFAS Extension.

While this seems like a wonderful way to remove marine debris (including many microplastics), mechanical beach cleaning can have many unintended (and undesirable) consequences including removal of organic material (nutrient and seed sources for beach plants that help retain/accumulate dunes) and removal of small buried insects, crabs and other animals that are a food source for resident and migrating birds.

BeBot is the first eco-friendly beach robot.

Many efforts are underway to find ways to manage plastics and prevent them from ending up in the environment. These range from research into plastic-eating bacteria to chemically engineering plastics to decay more quickly.
