Infant Critical Period

Infant Critical Period There is a critical period in an infant’s life that we are blinded to. That period is between birth-9 months.

This is a crucial development stage in the life of the infant. During the process of attachment, communication between the parent-infant dyad occurs. According to Erik Erikson’s stage of psychosocial development, in my opinion, the first stage, stage 1 of the psychosocial crisis = trust vs. mistrust, is the most critical in the development of an infant. In this initial stage of development, if a c

hild fails to complete it positively, mistrust occurs, and the infant’s ability to complete further stages is reduced. This stage begins at birth and continues to 18 months of age. In Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, when an infant is in the first stage, they experience a pattern of social neglect, the lack of basic needs, and affections. Mistrust is established, hope turns into fear, and finally, an overwhelming mistrust in the world and everyone around them.
