Out of an abundance of caution and a commitment to doing our part to maintaining the health and wellness of our Franklin County communities, the 2020 Franklin Region Career and Job Expo Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel this event.

This choice was not made lightly, and we would like to thank all of the employers and community members who planned to attend.

We want to honor the current guidance from the Center for Disease Control around avoiding large gatherings and practicing social distancing to help slow the spread of COVID-19, and feel that it would be irresponsible to host this event under the current circumstances.

Thank you all for your understanding in this matter. We are hopeful we'll be able to host a wonderful expo in the fall; however, no specific date is currently planned. Please continue to follow this page for updates.

Stay healthy, all.

Job Search Tip: Don't Apply to Too Many Jobs at Once

When you are unemployed, it is completely understandable to feel the pressure to get a job - any job - as soon as possible. This can lead to applying for every open position you see listed all at once. While this may seem like the quickest way to get interviews, it can actually be helpful to limit the amount of jobs to which you apply each day and week.

This gives you time to tailor your resume and cover letter to each position for which you apply, rather than using a generic one. It also gives you an opportunity to refine your approach if you find you aren't getting call-backs. If you apply to 20 positions in one day and realize after the fact that something about your resume, cover letter, or pre-employment assessment taking strategy is not working, you often will not have the opportunity to re-apply for those positions and be considered for hire.

You only have one chance to make a first impression on an employer, so make sure that you are giving yourself the time focus on exactly what you want that impression to be.

Job Search Tip - Say Thank You!

In addition to thanking the interviewer(s) at the interview, consider sending a "Thank You" email or note following a job interview. If you interviewed with multiple people, address it to the person who coordinated your interview or send a thank you note to each person from the panel. Make sure that it is personalized, and restate your interest in joining the team!

Not only does this help you stand out to employers, it also highlights your follow through and interest in the job! If the interview went well, it could be the tipping point in the hiring decision process!

Job Search Tip - Tailor Your Resume

Resume writing can be challenging. It's tempting to have a single, general resume and send it to all potential employers. This approach can hurt your chances of getting called in for an interview, though!

Instead, when applying for a job, review the skills and qualifications the employer is looking for and highlight how your prior work experience meets those requirements. Are there "buzz words" in the job posting? Can any of those words describe your current or former job responsibilities? If they can, incorporate them into your resume before you send it along!

It's OK if you have not done exactly what an employer is hoping for - just emphasize the ways in which things you have done match the employer's needs!
