As a disabled body and a mother of a child with a mental disability I have ran across many challanges in our region. In these challanges ive not found answers to them all. I want to b a change to how our system works so the next peer diesnt have to fight like my son and I did when we were faced with the complications that come with having disabilities. Complications can b as simple as ppl to relate to or finding nessassary help. In these times some helps are even harder to find than ever now too. I want to make an impact in my local community of Kanawha Co WV that can eventually spill over to other communities with in the US. No person faced with diversity of a disability should b alone. We all need help at times and for us who dont ask to have life harder already just need understanding at times. Peer support, groups, referrals, outings, and even simple modifications can help with this. In my journey I have found the search for help was harder than just recovery itself. Help should not b so hard to find. I mean we can walk out a door and find help for food if ur hungry or for drugs if ur high but for some ppl they are unable to leave there home for verious disability needs which complitate things more. I went through this journey and it made me sick too my stomach to learn how blind our community is. I had to learn to advicate for my own future and still do but I want to create platforms where as peers we support one another where no disabled person old or young feels alone as I did for months. Ive had my share of life experiences but by far but having to use a wheelchair to get around has been harder than any disability ive ever faced. Ive had issues in the past finding approate help for a child with ASD and fighting the system on rules on getting the child help but those have been nothing in compare. However I understand challanges affect each person differently. This is why I started DABS. I believe all disabled boddies have the ability to become Abled through empowerment and support. We will offer a host of information, connections, and even donated supplies to those in need reguardless of financial ability. Our goal is to support each DABS partispant with the direction determined to there needs upon completion of a DABS interview. Some partispatants may qualify for more based upon financial ability but anyone can qualify for referrals and peer support. We will strive to keep our supporters and team made of ppl who them self have disabilities or have specific degrees to work with specific disabilities. We are all in this together and can learn from one another.
