Six Years Ago Today 💙🖤

Six years ago today, on June 16, 2020, Joel graduated from the 137th Michigan State Police Trooper Recruit School and officially became Trooper Joel Popp.

It wasn't the graduation we had imagined. Because of COVID restrictions, family and friends were not allowed inside to celebrate with him. Instead, Emalyn and I watched from the parking lot and waited anxiously for the ceremony to end.

One of my favorite photos was captured right after graduation. Waiting outside with Emalyn, seeing Joel walk out in his uniform for the first time, Emalyn running to him so proud of her Daddy and him scooping her right up. Immediately after our little girl proudly pinned his badge on his chest. We were so proud of him.

Joel fulfilled his dream of serving the people of Michigan as a State Trooper. He wore the uniform with honor, integrity, and a servant's heart. Though his time with us was far too short, the impact he made continues to be felt by his family, friends, fellow troopers, and the community he loved.

Today, we remember not only the Trooper Joel became, but the husband, father, son, brother, and friend behind the badge.

A Lasting Tribute to Trooper Joel E. Popp

We are honored to share that the workout room at the Michigan State Police Tri-City Post has been officially dedicated as the Trooper Joel E. Popp Memorial Workout Room.

Joel's commitment to service, physical fitness, and excellence made the workout room a fitting place to honor his memory and legacy.

This dedication ensures that every Trooper who trains within these walls will be reminded of Joel's dedication, sacrifice, and the standards he lived by each day. His impact on the Tri-City Post and the law enforcement community will continue to be felt for generations to come.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Michigan State Police and the Tri-City Post for recognizing Joel in this meaningful and permanent way.

Joel's watch may have ended, but his legacy lives on.
