"Law Enforcement Career Exploring is open to young men and women ages 14 (and completed the 8th grade) and not yet 21 years old with an interest in learning more about careers in the field of Law Enforcement." - National Director: Bill Taylor The post was formed by Officer Ron Roach to give area youths the opportunity to "explore" the law enforcement field as a career possibility. The program give
s those members firsthand experience to see what a police officer does on a day to day basis. Explorers are able to ride along with patrol officers whenever they wish. Officers offer their time to show the members what they do while on duty. The post is overseen by the Boy Scouts of America, Learning for Life. Advisors for the post are Saginaw Township officers (Sgt. Fleming, CPO Schroeder, Officer Hill, and Det. Goetschy) who have volunteered to work with the post and its members. All post operations are overseen by one or more of the advisors. The post itself is actually run by the members, with advice and assistance given by the advisors. The Saginaw Township Police Explorer Post (STPE) operates completely on money that the members raise themselves. This money primarily comes from fundraisers and donations from the community. This money is used to purchase uniforms and equipment for the members. It also pays for post expenses to attend training camps and competitions with other explorer posts from across the country. Also, members have the opportunity to attend a boot style camp for additional exposure to law enforcement training. Explorers, by way of the training they receive, are able to assist patrol officers during some calls for service. Such as assisting in perimeter security for scenes, traffic control, and so on. Some training comes from the camps they attend. However, the majority of it comes from the advisors and the patrol officers. Many post members join as soon as they are old enough and stay until they must leave at age 21. During this time most become quite knowledgeable about law enforcement and have decided to make police work their career. Several Saginaw Township Police Officers were explorers when they were teenagers.
