Happy *almost* World Thinking Day!
In 1926, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides from around the world met in the United States for the 4th World Conference. At the meeting, they created a special day where Girl Scouts and Girl Guides think of each other and express their thanks for their sisters around the world. They called it Thinking Day. They chose February 22 because it was the birthday of both Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, and his wife Olave Baden-Powell, who founded the Girl Guides.
Over the years, World Thinking Day has become a way for girls to learn about issues that affect other girls and young women all over the world. Every year, World Thinking Day has a different theme that Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world can learn about and take action on. For 2021, the theme is peacebuilding. Choose to build peace: Be a leader and create a world that includes everyone. World Thinking Day not only gives girls a chance to celebrate international friendships, but it is also a reminder that Girl Scouts of the USA is part of a global community.
Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan will be hosting a World Thinking Day Extravaganza in late February! Stay tuned as we confirm the date and location. Girls will spread knowledge by sharing traditional crafts, songs, games, S.W.A.P.S, or whatever creative ways they can think of. All Girl Scouts in the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Council are welcomed to join us for a council wide event! In addition, many Service Units hold their own events. Check with your Service Unit to see if they are planning a World Thinking Day event that your girls can also attend. Please note that this is a traditional view of how we have celebrated Thinking Day in the past. As we continue to navigate Covid-19, Thinking Day might look different this year.
